  • I'm taking a (long) break from the forum

    Hi all,

I've been active on this forum for about a year and a half now, but I've been participating less and less over the last month or so.

Over the last year (since July 2017), I've had two "episodes" where I've spent way too much time on the computer in a short period of time, and it's led to a new "baseline" level of pain for me.

The most recent episode was just a few days ago. About 5 weeks ago I was prescribed carbamazepine by my doctor to manage my pain. It started working about a month after I started using it - but it was working a little too well. I had zero pain for a significant portion of the day, for a few days. This led to me not blinking as much (even when I wasn't on the computer), and I trusted my pain as a feedback system too much. I spent too much time on the computer one day, and the following day I had almost as much pain as I had before I started using the carbamazepine.

And one thing I've noticed about these episodes is that it seems to take less and less to "trigger" a new baseline level of pain for me. For this reason, I'm going to leave the forum for an indefinite period of time. I probably won't be back until some technology can actually reduce the number of pain signals my nerves are sending to my brain. Right now, all my doctor can do is prevent these signals from reaching the brain. On the plus side, I have plenty of meibomian glands left and if IPL can work for me again (I've tried IPL about 6 different times this year, to no avail), I might be back sooner than I think.

So long, and thanks for all the fish (oil)

    Hi Pythonidler,

Am so sorry to hear you've had these episodes, and will certainly miss your presence in this forum. You are truly a caring and well-versed individual, responding to so many individual posts and creating your document, ""What you need to know about computer-induced dry eye", passing on all your invaluable experience and knowledge to all in the forum with every word you write.

It's good you know you have to take a break in order to get better, and that you still have plenty of meibomian glands, they just need to figure out how to get them working. I think deciding when to take a break given our eye issues is a decision many of us have had to make, or are in the process of making, to various degrees.

Thank you so much, Pythonidler, for everything. I have faith things will get better for you, so look forward to hearing from you when things get better. Know that all your friends here in this forum are rooting for you.

      Hi Pythonidler,

Sorry to hear about the pain. I also have faith in you that you will get better.

Thank you for your great contribution. I have learnt many things from you.
We will miss you and hope to hear from you again soon.

If there a specific name for your pain please advise, if you dont mind.
I will write here if I happen to locate useful/related info.

You asked earlier on such issue. I use (dermatologist tested) pocket tissue paper

You will be missed but you are smart to recognize the trigger and do something about it! Take good care pythonidler!

Your contribution to the forum with your dry eye synopsis that you created has been invaluable, thanks so much for your hard work. I really hope that you recover again and this time it is more permanent. Dry eye is such a roller coaster....very frustrating.

Do you think that if IPL didn't help you 6 times that a seventh will make a difference, I would have given up long ago. I am expecting it to work sooner for me or I quit after the recommended 4 treatments.

I sincerely hope to see you back here soon.....cheers...F/G
