  • Does Ocular Rosacea Have Remission Periods?

    Hi folks,
I have been diagnosed with Ocular Rosacea about 4 years ago, after a couple of months of having dry eyes that never went away. I had the faintest hints of a blush on my face, so the ophthalmologist diagnosed me with Ocular Rosacea and Blepharitis. Since then, I have been using artificial tears and a nighttime gel and for the most part, my eyes were feeling okay- not back to normal, but very manageable.

About a month ago, I started getting the feeling of really heavy eye lids and sticky eyes, plus a foreign object sensation and burning in the eyes. That came about the same time when I started seeing more of a flush in my face. Ever since, I have been miserable trying to keep the dryness under control. I went to an optometrist who said my oil glands were blocked, and the tear evaporation time was very fast (about 1 second I think), meaning my eyes dry 10-15 times faster than a person with healthy eyes. I have been taking oral antibiotics, doing the warm compresses and lid massages, and applying all sorts of artificial tears and gels, but so far none of it seems to have helped.

My question for sufferers of ocular rosacea. Do you ever get periods of remission when your eyes are totally fine, and periods of flare ups? Also how do you manage the dryness and lid inflammation? What kind of treatments do you use, and what have you found to be the most effective treatment?

I have been really miserable with my eyes lately, and I greatly appreciate any help and feedback.

You might want to try IPL , seems to have good success w/ Rosacea + MGD.

Very sorry to hear about this. I also have been diagnosed with ocular rosacea, which started as blepharitis years ago but came on after lasik. Low TBUT and blocked oil glands. It sounds like you're doing all the right treatments. Stay at it. Have you tried fish or flaxseed oil supplements?

Next advanced step might be Lipiflow or IPL. Maybe ask your doctor about these options during your next appointment.

To answer your question, I understand it can go into remission and then flare up but I can't speak to this personally since mine is fairly constant. To be honest I still don't really understand what ocular rosacea is despite my doctors' best attempts to educate me. I would also appreciate hearing from any veterans with knowledge of this issue.

        Hi
just do step by step, you will get better, like me.

You need all necessary objective data to identify causes & to stop progression.

Perhaps this #30 could give you a better picture how to cope it effectively/economically too.

optimusdryeyes when you say your eyes are sticky, do you mean when you blink? I am curious because I also have ocular rosacea and my glands are blocked. Apparently, IPL is great for that.

Also, facial rosacea has certain triggers so I suspect ocular rosacea could also be similar. I have good and bad days and I don’t see any explanations (apart for hormonal cycles) but, perhaps, I am missing a trigger.

Hi hopeful_hiker, yes they feel sticky when I blink. Also feel that my lids are super heavy, just like the feeling you get if your eye twitches. At first, when this new episode started, I kept thinking my eyes were twitching but could not see it in the mirror.

I think my biggest personal trigger is stress. I suffer from chronic anxiety due to a myriad of health problems, and I believe all of my health problems (including this dreaded disease) are because of stress. The problem with stress is that it aggravates the chronic conditions it has caused (like rosacea or my other condition GERD), so then you get stressed about your symptoms flaring up which causes more symptoms and it is like a vicious cycle.

Thank you so much for this. It has some amazing resources. I think you are more knowledgeable in this disease than most of the doctors I have been to I have a question. Do you have ocular rosacea, or a different type of dry eye? One thing that looked interesting is HydroEye. I was thinking of using fish oil supplements but the reviews of this on amazon are superb, with many customers saying it really helped their eyes. I have not seen mention of ocular rosacea though so I wonder if it will help that as well. I think my biggest frustration with dry eye is the many different factors that can cause it, with different treatments working better based on the underlying cause.
