I have used plugs, Refresh optive, and Restasis for years. I started after multiple surgeries for retinal detachments, and then had lasik to compensate for terrible vision after the detachments. Of course this makes dry eye worse. I am seeing a dry eye specialist. The plugs helped like a miracle for about 6 months. Then for some reason, repeated inserts became uncomfortable, so I stopped them. Like others, I don't know if Restasis still helps or not. I stopped for a month, but read that it would take a long time to have effect again, so I restarted them. I think due to my location in L.A. the air is so dry as to aggravate my dry eyes.
Being in the medical field, I have concerns about chronic use of Doxycycline, so never started it.
I thought by now there would be some breakthrough for dry eye therapy, but none so far.
So, I'm one of the chronics--considering moving to Louisiana where I grew up, but have been in CA for 40 years now.
I will continue to scan these pages for advice.
