  • Cloudy serum???

So I have a question for everyone using autologous serum. I had a blood draw for 20% serum a few weeks ago. When I got it, there was a precipitate, like a cloudy, sandy substance. If I let the serum sit untouched, that stuff falls to the bottom and just sits there. My only research brought up that it may be triglycerides or high fat content in the blood. That would make sense, I’m eating a low carb high fat diet. Here’s what’s odd though....

about 10 days after that I went to UIC and they made me 50% serum. I was super worried it would be cloudy, didn’t eat much that day cause I was so far from home. The serum came out perfectly yellow. No cloudiness.

So im wondering, is there something I can do to prevent this. Is this a fasting issue? I wonder if eating 5 whole eggs 2 hours before the draw effected my serum. Any ideas or experiences with this would be appreciated.

It doesn't sound right to me that it should be cloudy. I would ask the guy that made it if that is normal.

I’ll be seeing him on the 6th, I will of course ask him and let you know.

In my totally non-expert opinion, eating 5 whole eggs before your blood draw can cause high levels of fat/cholesterol in your blood serum! Not sure if you’ve studied biology, but your blood serum after ingesting a high choleral cheeseburger looks totally different and gross than compared to fasting (in a side by side comparison of the serum in a tesr). That said, I’ve never noticed anything like that in my serum so curious to hear what your doc says at your next visit.

My serum drops have always been clear light yellow fluid. I would also be weary of using the drops if they turned cloudy.

I have a bachelor in science from Indiana university. That’s why I brought up the eggs. When I researched this, I was told that it was most likely triglycerides. I’m getting a full metabolic panel soon. I wish I could eat the eggs before and see what happens. I’ve asked if I should fast for my serum draw and was told no. However, I’m going to fast before every draw now. It’s the only thing making sense.

All that being said, I’ve never worked with blood serum samples in a lab. So no, I didn’t know that your serum looks like trash after a cheeseburger....but makes total sense.

Not using them, they don’t feel good so there’s something wrong here. I thankfully have 50% serum I got a week later that’s perfect. My serum is always golden yellow almost amber at 50% concentration and soooooo soothing. I have to have serum so it was a bummer going almost a week without good serum.

Yeah, good call stopping the serum. Just doesn't make sense if you've never seen it like that before...

Yeah, so lucky I had the 50% prescription at UIC. I’m going to see him in two days, I’m going to take the serum in and show him and see what he says. I’ll update the thread. I want to post anything that I can’t find when I search the site. That way if someone else has this issue, they can get an answer.

Well, I’m super disappointed today actually. I have an answer from the corneal specialist, who I very much thought was a great guy before this. He diagnosed the reason why I was getting erosions at night. He made my serum and I never had an issue, until now....

So heres what he said, I brought in 4 bottles, one of them had green plastic in it. So I say to him, can you tell my why this is all cloudy and it separates into a grainy mess at the bottom. He said, I used a different carrier, I didn’t have saline or balanced salt solution...it may have bound with something in your blood. I showed him the green plastic, he said it may be part of the rubber stopper from the carrier. He said that’s it’s still good and I told him, it’s not comfortable at all.

So im thinking he’s going to give me a discount or maybe even a free batch. Nope, didn’t offer...he may give me a discount when I get them, so I’ll go in for one more batch and see if he makes it right. If not, I’m just going to go to UIC and get the 50% more frequently. Sucks because he’s 15 mins from my house versus an hour plus Chicago traffic...but I gotta have serum.
