  • styes and dry eye

    Hi!
Long story short for everyone that doesn't know my story, I have dry eyes and I developed around the time I started taking birth control, I've stopped that now 2 years later I still have dry eye. I live a normal life thanks to flax seed oil, fish oil, and multivitamins, they really help me. But I am not able to wear any makeup, at all, any type of powder makeup dries my eyes like crazy. Sometimes I can even go days without eye drops as long as I'm not wearing makeup.

Well my question is the following, I've been discussing this with farmgirl and can't come to any conclusion.

I've tried NEW, brand new makeup and eyeshadow and my old makeup, with both I get styes. I get dry eyes and the next day it doesn't matter how good I clean my eyes I walsy alwaysssssss get styes. and we're talking about 2 or 3 per eye.

    Any ideas anyone? thanks!

I’m wondering if the makeup is compacting in the glands preventing oil from coming out causing infection?

Could it be an allergy to the makeup causing an allergic reaction in the lid that leads to inflammation and infection?

These are my first two thoughts...does this happen even if there is no makeup applied to the eye? Say for example if you just use a light foundation and avoid the eye completely, do you still get the infection?

First, you need a good dry eye doctor for diagnostic. Where do you live?

You should also definitely try IPL. IPL has been known to help Styes and MGD dry eyes. Give it a try!

See this twitter post by a well known and respected dry eye doctor on chalazion (styes):

This sounds about right, sometimes I think I might have a reaction the makeup. It does happen even if I just apply powder foundation. Even if I avoid the my eye area I feel I still get more dry eyes than normal but still the next day I have at least one stye.
I also want to clarify, when I say I wear eyeshadow, is just eyeshadow and of course try to put it not even my lash line... (i look ridiculous) but still couple of hours later I start getting dry eye and next day styes. I wish I could show the styes but I dont have a good camera. But they're just clear bumps and really bother me when I blink.

deepdryeye: I live in Virginia, USA. I dont have any money left for doctors, I've been going to apts for the last 2 years, I've visited all best doctors around my area, I even googled "best dry eye specialist near me" which was 3 hours away, I went twice and only prescribe his very own eyedrops and tried to sell me lipiflow. I would do it but I dont have the money anyway.

sirdryeye: I used to buy the expensive ones, not anymore, I buy a green bottle cant remember the brand at Walmart but they're pretty cheap like $10 box each, I take flax seed oil, fish oil and sometimes I even add evening primrose, I also take a women's multivitamin and vitex (I buy it on amazon it's a white bottle with green leaves) I just started taking vitamin A because I read it helps with inflammation. Regarding docsis i tried to vary it per day, sometimes i take 3 fish oil and 2 fax speed and so on. Also I stop for a week because if not i get a lot of buildup in my body and i had a pretty nasty side effect a few months ago.

But I do have another question though, in a this forum I've only seen a few girls who cant wear makeup. Most of them messaged me and said they can wear foundation and stuff and sometimes even eyeshadow and it doesn't bother them... if we all have meibomian gland dysfunction in common I wonder why only a few of us get styes and more dry eyes with makeup... it's so odd

              Hi Sophie

I remember one of your doctors recommended debridement (prior to LipiFlow).
Maybe debridement or BlephEx (professional cleaning) would help, depending on your situation.
              I would try BlephEx first.

Recently there is an interesting news about a woman, never taken off mascara overnight - see picture below
The study, published by the American Academy of Opthamology, the spots were darkly pigmented 'subconjunctivital concretions' which were linked to a form of conjunctivitis.

Theresa and Dr Dana Robaei have now released the images to warn other women of the dangers of not taking off mascara overnight

I can remember back when my allergies started, I can almost tue it to my dry eyes getting a notch worse. In 2007 I had a bottle of creed cologne. I loved that stuff, handmade, fermented oil. Well one day I sprayed it, I noticed a reaction. All of a sudden my eyes would itch, my chest and throat would tighten. I had to stop wearing it, and my eternity for men.

From there it just got worse. I would then start reacting to tide detergent. So I had to use a quarter of the recommended soap in the washer. Otherwise same thing would happen, I put on a shirt and instantly everything tightened up.

my point is that I do believe you can get an allergy one day seemingly out of nowhere. I believe an allergic reaction can definitely effect your eyelids. So I guess you have a few options.

You could just stop wearing make up, which doesn’t seem all too cool.

You could buy a few brands of makeup and try them all. See if you stumble on one that doesn’t cause a reaction. This method, also not very cool.

You could go to an allergist and see if they can determine and control your allergy. This would be great if you could find a good doctor.

Im curious if you have small papillary conjunctivitis. I have this, the doctor said it was from contact use but I haven’t worn them in 20 years. I’m goinh to ask him if he believes this is left over from my youth or if this is an allergic reaction to something I’m currently encountering. I genuinely believe this could be an allergy, causing inflammation possibly papillae on the lid and then causing your styes.

well.. I've thought about that too.. but is just its so weird I mean I guess everytime someones posts they're opinion I can describe my symptoms better... but I mean when I apply it doesn't automatically bother me... I am fine for let's say about an hour... today for example, I applied my makeup around 6:30am, it's 9:07am already and my eyes are killing me, specially the corners feel super dry.

and I've tried brands like Estee Lauder and Clinique and still... same thing....

sophie0416 I have been allergic to most eyeshadows and eyeliners even before the dry eye conundrum. In my case, I would feel burning if I applied them. I can use one eyeshadow from Physician’s formula and only liquid eyeliners.

That being said, maybe the sensation you feel is not really dryness but allergies (as others have suggested).

I use cosmetic database to find clean brands and see what ingredients are bad. Clinique and Estée Lauder are not really known for being that clean. They are still run of the mill, your regular department store cosmetics. I would go to Whole Foods to try out make up. They let you return things if you are not happy with them (at least in my area). Other health stores usually also have a good choice.

Check out this website: EWG You can sort by ranking (higher is bad). This podcast by Dr Laura Periman could be helpful.

A few few more random tips... Don’t use waterproof makeup, comedogenic skin products. Make sure to minimize bacteria in your make up. Clean hands, face, etc.

Personally, I am currently using a bit of liquid black eyeliner on my upper lid (without letting it leak into the lash line). I got Mineral Fusion product. I have to use foaming eye scrub (Ocusoft maybe?) to gently wipe it away with a Q tip.

Thank you so much for your advice, I really appreciate it. and Wow I thought Clinique or Estee Lauder would be good because you know, they're so expensive... I mean I have cheap ones like kylie cosmetics and even not cheap like Anastasia Beverly Hills and same result... talking about good caring brands I've also tried Almay, they're really known for the amazing mascara for sensitive eyes but still didn't work for me.. but I guess I can try Physians Formula... I really need a good eyeliner that won't smudge cause right now I'm using almay and its all smudge and maybe that's why my eyes are doing worse.

ALSOOOOO I just noticeddd! THIS IS LIFE CHANGING... I just realized OMG how do I explain this... so to be honest my left eye is fine.. I do not feel dryness, well not more than normal, but my RIGHT EYE one of my meibomian glands looks like.. like a pimple black spot.... does that make sense? and well anyway it looks inflammated and that's whats bothering me right now I feel like I have a hair stuck in my eye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just went to the bathroom to see my eyes better and it even looks like a super tiny dark spot old pimple on my waterline....................................... WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THISSSSSSSSSSSS
