  • Just had plugs put in

hey everyone I just had temporary plugs put in. They will last for 3 weeks or so till I get permanent ones. The procedure was painless in the right eye, slight pain in the left, but feels fine now. I値l give an update at the end of the week on whether there痴 an improvement. However I知 worried they値l fall out after a warm compress and massage. What am I gonna do?

Also when should I start to see an improvement?

From my experience if plugs work then you should notice them within a few hours. Before my surgery I had a plug put in each eye due to mild dryness and I remember it provided great relief almost right away, in fact later that night my eyes were tearing too much (it was rather annoying at the time). Of course after my surgery plugs don't seem to make an ounce of difference. However your mileage may vary, that is just my personal experience. As for falling out of your eyes, this is also really personal. For some people they seem to fall out no matter what they do, for others they stay in no matter what they do. I wouldn't alter your routine any (just don't aggressively itch the corner of your eye, which I would advise against anyway). Then let your doctor examine if they are still in on follow up.

Yepp, an hour or two. I鋳 would recommend assessing your symptoms once you are at home. It could be hard to tell if you are outside with wind/low humidity.

If they don稚 help it could mean that you need upper plugs, too, or that your primary issue is not aqueous but rather MDG.

edit: oh and yes, give your eyes some time to get adjusted from all the poking. I personally could not tolerate one plug擁t scratched my eye at certain angles. I also noticed it at night, so the next morning I went back. I had to get a plug that goes into the canal and does not stick out. You should not feel the plugs day to day.

diydry hopeful_hiker I致e had the plugs in for 7 hours now and still no relief. If anything my eyes feel worse and I have a slight sting in the corner of my left eye. What a waste of time and money today was....

Should I try upper plugs? What difference would it make if I have mgd my eyes are still aqueous defficient either way?

SirDryEye i wouldn稚 worry just yet.
Youve had your eyes prodded around a lot today, the corners of my eyes sting/ felt scratchy for the first 24 hours or so, I think it痴 just from having something put in your eye that shouldn稚 really be there! theres going to be a bit of recovery time/ time for it to settle down.

A few people I have spoken to found 4 plugs to be helpful when two weren稚.
But id give it a while longer yet.

                Hi
Seems many have plugs and they do help - could you share how exactly you find them useful?
reduce using eye drops, less dryness?......etc

For those of us who are aqueous deficient, punctal plugs help quite a bit. They reduce the frequency that I feel the need to put in more artifical tears as they hold the moisture on my eye longer. I've had the permanent silicone plugs in my lowers for the past 5 years after my PRK procedure.

Last year I had the uppers plugged also and found even better relief as I went from putting in eye drops (Refresh Advanced) every 30 minutes to about every 45 minutes. However, both upper plugs fell out after about 4-5 months and the upper puncta has been inflamed ever since. My doc has tried numerous times since with different plug sizes and brands to plug the uppers but they always come out a few days later.

Tip for new users: Make sure not to rub your eyes or scratch the corners of your eyes as others have mentioned to help prevent them from coming out. You may feel a tear run down the side of your nose occasionally from the extra tear buildup, but it sure is better than being extra dry all the time.

Glucoa thank you for your response. Couldn稚 you just get your lowers or uppers cauterised instead of the plugs?

If I am not mistaken temporary plugs are placed in the canthus similar to an intercanalicular plugs so there is not 'umbrella' to irritate the eye. There is therefore no need to worry about dislodging them. Take note though that just because they don't help doesn't mean that plugs will not help. For one thing they do not occlude as completely as a silicone plug does plus often plugging 2 of the 4 ducts is not sufficient. I am aqueous deficient and had to play with plugs a lot to find out what worked. First I had silicone uppers and those didn't help plus they felt 'scratchy' on my eyeballs. Then I had lowers and those didn't help. Then I had temporary upper and lowers and those helped so I had all 4 plugged. In time I ended up having the uppers cauterized and the lowers are still plugged.

I was loathe to cauterize all 4 incase I find some treatment that works great and restores my lacrimal glands so that I need some form of drainage.

If just the 2 don't help, don't abandon plugs unless you have over tearing.......that is not good.

I will echo farmgirl and Glucoa here.

I'm mainly aqueous deficient, due to LASIK. I also have a low TBUT.

I tried temporary collagen plugs in my lowers, didn't really notice a difference.

Then I had 2 lots of silicone ones in my lowers, but kept losing them.

I now have Smart plugs in my lowers because I'm told you can't run them out (controversial because of the potential complications with them) and silicone ones in my uppers.

This has made a huge difference. I rarely need drops in my right eye, which is my good one, and every few hours to my left, when I'm working on the PC.

I still get mucus in the morning which needs cleaning out and sometimes during the day.

I get a little over tearing in my right when outside, eating or exercising.

I'm also nearly three months into Ikevis and finished steroids three weeks ago.

I've stopped hot compresses and eye massages, haven't noticed any change.

I've cut down on gluten and sugar, I take omega 3 supplements, probiotics and flaxseed supplements. I eat a piece of oily fish each day. Tinned mackerel or sardines, very cheap, on gluten-free bread.

I no longer wake with bone-dry, sore eyes stuck down.

I've also found my vision is better.

Who is treating you and helping you manage your condition and what have you been diagnosed with?

If I can help please get in touch, I'm based in Stockport in the UK.

Went to sleep at around 10 pm and woke up at 2 am with very dry eyes. I applied some more ointment and put on some moisture goggles to relieve the pain. The plugs haven稚 made any difference as far as I知 aware, and the corner of my left eye is red and inflamed. It stings slightly and there痴 now some red mark there. I知 pretty angry as you can imagine as I had to travel all day yesterday to get the plugs done

This may not be the plugs.

I didn't get on with ointment (VITA-POS), made my eyes sore, very much so in the corners.

Before Ikervis and the extra plugs I found plenty of Hycocan Extra in each eye before closing them at night worked better for me, and my eyes woke feeling ok.

Are your eye over tearing since the plugs?
