  • Had Shirmer test one week ago - is it possible the paper scratched my eye?!

I had a Shirmer Test done one week ago at Moorfields, ever since then there is a searing pain in my left eye - as if acid has been poured into it.
I am using Xailin eye gel once an hour and then the night gel at night but the pain is excruciating and my condition is not improving.
I have been suffering from dry eyes for 10 months now (apparently it is evaporative eye disease) so I am used to the feeling of my eyes being dry and stinging despite using eye drops but the burning sensation is a new one. Is it possible that the paper in the Schirmer Test scratched my eye? The left one only is burning, the right one just feels very dry.

When I had Schirmer’s done, both of my eyes had huge red spots on the white part. It went away in half of a day or less. You could be sensitive to your eye drops.

I had a red spot on one eye and that is because the eye was so dry that the paper pulled the skin off when it stuck to the eyeball. It was not an issue like you describe though. It was only on the white part not on the cornea.

Thank you for your replies I’m new to the forum and posted the same post twice by mistake! I think the burning could have been caused by the Schirmer Test irritating my eye and then exacerbated by new eye drops I tried (Systane. Balance which contain preservatives...) Still not sure my left eye is considerably worse.

Sorry I inadvertently posted the same post twice, I am new to this forum. I think the Schirmer test paper irritated my already sensitive / dry eye and then it was further exacerbated by new eye drops, Systane balance which contain preservatives. Thank you for your messages I’ll carry on with the preservative free gel in the hope that the burning will stop, it’s been over a week now....
