  • Schirmer Test - is it possible the paper strip scratched my eye?

I had a Schirmer Test done one week ago - ever since then my left eye has been burning like never before.
Using eye gels every hour and ointment at night is not helping whatsoever, just providing momentary relief. Is it possible the paper strip irritated my eye?
I am used to the sensation of dry eyes as I was diagnosed with evaporative eye syndrome 10 months ago but the burning sensation is new.
Also it's just the left eye affected which has always been slightly dryer than the right. The right one just feels dry.
Or could this just be the next stage of dry eye disease?!

When I went to UIC dr Jain took samples of my tears for clinical testing. He nicked my right eye and it took about two weeks to feel better. When my corneal specialist saw it, he said my conjunctiva was inflamed in the lower left pocket. I was on steroids by the way, that’s another reason I healed so well.

After the Schirmer’s test I had red spots with inflamed blood vessels on the sclera. Lasted a day maybe.

So yeah, maybe something got scratched up especially if you feel discomfort in the same spot.

You could also be sensitive to your eye drops.

It’s interesting you should mention sensitivity to eye drops as the doctor who did the Schirmer Test advised me to try Systane Balance since none of the other eye drops I have been using were working for me. The Systane drops stung a bit when I first used them so haven’t used them since. I didnt realise but these contain preservatives so I could be allergic to that. I’ll stick to the preservative free gel I’m hoping the burning sensation will improve its been over a week now.

I won't let anybody schirmer me. Too painful.

I will never do schirmer again, did +10 times ranging from 0 (once) -30 (once), nearly 45% did incorrectly - should be the last step.

I had enough, been curious and did lots of research. Results:
-Schirmer is not objective as tear meniscus height (TMH), according to most opinion leaders in USA.

-Doctors Periman, Gupta and Toyos (1st dr applied IPL to treat MGD) perform TMH.
It is not one of tests listed in Dr Korb office website, I have paid special attention to this.

more - my earlier posting, in case someone are curious
