  • You're 'Chronic illness Depression'.

If you're looking at this topic? then i guess you have it!. It's 1 of the 3 top causes of depression. The other 2 are work related stress, and family breakdowns/bereavment.
Try to fight depression if you're problem is not likely to go away (chronic illness) is ridiculous. If it gave you depression and is staying put, then so is you're depression. The other 2 main causes of depression i listed above are now going to become a factor also- you're work, you can't carry on as before or you may need to leave your job, lifestyle and maybe money issues also a problem.
Family will not understand you either. Basicly an accumilation of all 3 is why you feel as bad as you do.
Depression or what's known about it is, that it can happen to ANYONE,NOBODY IS IMMUNE there are millions of transmitors in your brain releasing feel good chemicals, depression or stress will reduce the output of the chemical, and the worse the stress (ongoing) the less and less you're brain is producing, stress is going through the roof where as you're bodys natural counter is going through the floor.
To add to this, you will have no doubt heard the one about "anti-depressents will possibly make my eyes drier?" so this is not an option.
    Oh dear, what now?.
I have been on Anti-depressents for over 4 yrs now and am now down to the lowest dosage which i by choice after many trial and errors have also found i can take them one every other day. And no my eyes are no drier with or without them.
I have said it many times on here in the past that i was as low as it goes and was ready to throw the towel in in the beginning, this was before i hit rock bottom not able to even make an appointment to see my doctor, my wifes doctor orderd me to come.
Anti depressents stimulate the relevant transmitors in your brain to combat the high levels of stress you're under, and are otherwise losing the battle.
The higher the dosage- the higher the stimulation, till it becomes an even fight, belive it or not, after some time you start to win the battle very slowly and start to think about lowering the dosage and frequency.
Oh, and my antidepressents are called VENLAFLAXINE but i understand they may have a different brand name in your country, your GP/Pharmacist will find out for you.
Hope this puts things into simple explanation for as many people as possible who are feeling they can't go on any more- AT THE MOMENT...

Great post Colin P. I think people are understandably scared about their eyes getting drier when using anti-depressants. I've suffered from severe depression (not wanting to get out of bed, eat etc) in the past and despite the severity of my dry eyes I know that if I sunk into that pit of hopelessness again then I would try ADs again. It can be trial and error both on the dry eye side and getting the right AD for your brain chemistry. Dry eye is so horrible but untreated depression is a lot worse and can cause is to stop wanting to help our eyes improve through lifestyle changes. Luckily my family were around to make me get up, eat and go for walks when i was at my lowest ebb. I needed a fairly short course of Prozac to get me functioning again.

P.s. I loved your 'Milky bar kid' comment on the other thread. If i saw him i know I wouldn't be able to stop myself thinking about that

Fighting MGD and dry eye for a year now when I finally was told there was no cure only management, I suffered severe anxiety and depression. I could not eat or sleep, I was totally paralyzed by this. Luckily I found a Medical Doctor who has helped me with this and I too have been on anti-depressants and anxiety med for a little over a month. It seems that eye doctors should address this more. My eyes might have gotten a little drier with the medications but at least I am sleeping and eating again. Your whole life turns upside down when your eyes hurt.

It's best to let the dust settle, but once your 'in a better place' J maybe ask your doctor to try you on another brand of tablets? I was in hospital over the depression for 7 weeks, the other patients had bi-polar or stuff like that, every one of them was on trial and error with there medication, you'd be remarkably lucky if you got it right first time.
Question for you J, would you trade the tablets and welcome back the depression and anxiety?.
Oh, and where would you see yourself now, if you never started on the anti-depressents?.

You asked me where I would be if I never started the anti-depressants, I think in the morgue! My GP was my life saver, he has since changed my anti-depressant to a milder one but I might be having a slight reaction to it. I am going to give it another day before I give him a call. Like everything you have to find the right one that fits. The anxiety was the most crippling, so I take a low dose of anxiety medication. I am glad I found your thread, it made me feel better knowing that depression and anxiety is a major side effect of severe dry eye disease. I needs to be addressed more Colin P.

Hiya J. I find that understanding (a bit anyway lol) is good, just came accross this just now by accident as i was looking at 'best diets for each blood group'. I happen to Know i'm A-(neg) and it says an 'A'(+/-) produces too much CORTISOL which might go some way to explaining why some people more than others are susseptable to mental illness in Adulthood.
I will provide a link, but in the meantime type in your search engine- PSYCHOLAGY TODAY CORTISOL.
Cortisol the stress hormone is apparantly public enemy #1 , thankfully advice is given how to counter/control stress and anxiety cortisol.
Dont bother with the wikipedia page it tells you nothing much.
