  • Optometrist said no dry eye, but I still have a swollen caruncle, and irritation

I've been battling dry eye symptoms in my right eye for about 3 years now. I finally got good insurance a few months ago, and went to see an optometrist. He prescribed lotemax for me, and told me to do hot compresses. I followed up with him two times after that. The first followup he expressed my meibomian glands and oil did come out. The second time he did the dye test and said I don't have any dry eye. He also said that the eye looked great. I asked him why I feel irritation under my eyelid then, and he said it was probably eye allergies. He prescribed Pataday for me, and said to do one-drop a night in each eye, but that I likely wouldn't need to do it everyday.

My eye has felt somewhat better, but I'm still having issues with irritation, and a swollen caruncle. It does feel like there is more lubrication coming into the eye though. I wasn't sure if anyone else has gotten similar diagnoses from their doctors, and if anything has helped them.

I am also having itchy caruncle on and off for the past few months. This is only in my left eye. My left eye is more dry than my right. I also am quadraplugged. The right caruncle never seems to be itchy. Hmmmm?

When it gets really irritated I'll put another drop of Pataday in my eye, and that seems to help more than just putting lubricating drops in. I think I'm going to buy Zaditor or Alaway, and see if that helps.

        Hi Eric Charles,

Please let me know if you notice any relief from the Zaditor or Alaway!

        Thank you,
        Mandy

Hi Amanda, I used the Zaditor for a couple weeks and didn't really notice a change, and I haven't used the Pataday in almost a month, and my eye hasn't gotten worse. I've actually started to not use any drops over the last few weeks, and while my eye feels gritty and dry at times, I don't seem to have as much pain, or stinging. I've also begun wearing reading glasses at work and I think that has helped.

I've noticed that on days where I don't have to look at a screen I don't notice my eye bothering me all that much. On days where I'm out with friends or doing things I barely ever notice my eye bothering me so I'm not sure what the issue is. I have an appointment with an Opthamologist, but it's not until November 12th. I'm seeing an allergist today, so maybe they can tell me something about my eye issues. I apologize for taking so long to respond. I was hoping that I'd have something concrete to tell you, but it looks like my eye issues are still a mystery.
