  • New patient with lack of sleepiness due to Dry Eyes.

Hi, my name is Felipe, i'm from Brazil.

i'm suffering from dry eye since 2014.

First started with the dryness in the morning, then the burning sensation but in the last two weeks the disease arrived in a very serious and crippling stage: I don't feel sleepy anymore, I don't know how to describe with words but my eyes don't feel tired anymore, i lost the sensibility from the light
example: When you keep your eyes closed for long tiime the normal and healthy reaction would find it difficult to open on contact with the light, but I do not feel the difficulty anymore, not even when I look at the sun, I do not feel difficulty to look at the sun, it's just a complete and extreme dry sensation. Because of this i CAN'T sleep without sleeping pills. I lost the ability to fall asleep. I'm very afraid.

I already tried the drops and ointments, now my doctor prescribed tacrolimus 0,03%, i'm waiting the arrive.

Someone could explain what it's going on with my eyes? any ideas? I think my case is very severe or maybe unique, since i can't even find a drescription or even search in google because i can't find anything related with this lack of sleepness.

Someone please help me, i don't know what to do, i can't live with this sleep problem anymore. I already have psychological problems but this lack of sleepiness is just too much to handle it, i'm physically and mentally tired and each day i feel more and more hopeless

Any thoughts would be very apreciated.

    Sincerely, Felipe.

Fellipe. You need to tell your doctor immediatly what is happening, and tell them the stress your under like you can't go on with life. Surely it is stress/depression related. Severe depression will stop you sleeping as you can't sleep while your body is having a panic attack(i've been there). Nobody can exist without any sleep that is ridiculous. Unfortunately when you're body goes into emergency mode and think's it's under attack 'fight or flight' you get shock &/or panic attacks there are coping tecqhnics and medication for this.

Colin, thanks for your post. First, too clarify: I'm sleeping everyday, but with pills. I simply can't sleep without these pills anymore. The last day i tried without the pills i slept only 2 hours. they prescribed these pills when i went to the hospital last week after three days without any sleep!

And i'm almost 100% sure that lack of sleepiness is related due my dry eyes and not depression/panic or anything. I have depression since five years ago but i never had any sleeping problems until the dryness started.

It has something to do to the eye sensibility that don't make they tired anymore.
It's hard too even describe but something is very wrong with my eyes and i'm worried that nothing can be done or diagnosed.

I will see my ophthalmologist again only after 30 days of using tacrolimus to see if works. But eventually i will see other doctor in that meantime because it's becoming hard to cope/living with this and i do not want to live the rest of my life taking sleeping pills

And sorry for my bad english!

Fellipe, your English is way better than my Portugese!..
As i understand it, unless you have developed insomnia somehow? Despite no previous symptoms, then ALL sleep loss or bad nights sleep are due to stress or you doing something wrong? A specialist should have come accross what your describing.
And regards 'taking pills for the rest of your life' (maybe?) so what?... Most of our population over 55 here in the UK are on pills indefinatly... And plenty of them are on 2,3, or more different pills for different ailments..
