  • Using ointment? Beware of Lanolin allergy.

Posting in case this helps anyone troubleshoot problems tolerating eye ointment at night.

Rebecca put together an awesome chart that shows which ointments do NOT contain Lanolin: https://dryeyeshop.com/blogs/news/th...aga-what-to-do

You'll notice that out of 11 ointments listed, only 2 of them are lanolin-free. So there are high odds that whatever ointment YOU are using contains this common contact allergen.

So this is why I developed irritation from using azithromycin ointment after a month when I used it during June-July last year. I developed severe irritation for three days while using it again recently. I don't develop such irritation while using loteprednol ointment. So I believe I am allergic to one or more of the the constituents of the azithromycin ointment possibly lanolin.

I am allergic to all ointments even lanolin free. I can’t use eruthromycin or restasis..allergic to both.

We need polymer based gels to be used as drug delivery mechanisms.

I am intolerant of gels and ointments and always assumed it was the petroleum base but was unaware of the lanolin component. I had a negative reaction to lanolin on testing years ago but can tolerate it on my skin in lotions so never much worried about it. Thanks, this explains a lot

Yes, I've heard anecdotally that some people are allergic to the mineral oil or petrolatum component.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that!

Yes, it's a definite possibility, and worth testing.

Azasite is a gel not an ointment here...at least I was given a gel drop. Can you ask the pharmacy if they offer a gel?

Well azasite is not available in India.
