  • AMT surgery on nasal part of eye

Last year I had AMT surgery on the temporal area of my eye with great results. My main complaints were redness and inflammation. I was having some similar problems of redness and inflammation on the inner part of my eye since May. I tried steroid drops for a week but it had very little effect on my symptoms. I had the surgery in September and I am very happy with
how comfortable my eye feels and also the cosmetic look. I attached 4 photos of how my eye looks at week 1, 2 , 3 and 4

      What is AMT surgery?

AMT stands for amniotic membrane transplantation. My conjunctiva tissue had become loose or irregular and my tears weren't able to spread evenly over my eye and my eye was becoming inflamed. A loose conjunctiva can happen from age or sometimes after contact lens use or after cosmetic eyelid surgery or many other reasons. The doctor surgically got rid of the damaged conjunctival tissue and then laid amniotic membrane over that area so it could heal quickly and without scarring.

          Is it a common procedure?

The doctor that did the surgery is the one that pioneered the surgery and he does it quite often. I am not sure how many other doctors do the procedure.

How did you find this doctor?

I researched dry eye specialists because no doctors were helping me where I live. Dr Tseng had pioneered many procedures with amniotic membrane that were helping people so I traveled to Miami. He also did the amniotic membrane on the outer parts of both my eyes which were successful in getting rid of the redness and burning and inflammation.

Gosh, I wonder if this could be my issue. Here in Australia, I have developed really bad dry eye - supposedly - since two failed DCRs to unblock my tear ducts (they are still both blocked). No one knows why the failed DCRs caused dry eye. I have tried everything for the past 4 years and have been miserable due to the inflammation and constant burning in both eyes. Most recently, I saw a new ophthalmologist and she at first found what she thought was a huge tear miniscus, and hence years pooling and maybe this was causing the irritation (as my drainage ducts are still blocked, remember). Then she did another test (LIPCOF) and immediately said - "No! Scrub that idea. What I can see here is not a huge tear film but ruffled up conjunctiva." and it seems this was interrupting my tears. So maybe your solution could also be mine. However, the ophthalmologist also found I had effectively zero tear miniscus and she just suggested constant artificial tears and that was it. Could a poor tear miniscus occur due to with a ruffled up conjunctiva, though?) Craig (Melbourne ,Australia).

Where was the inflammation on inner eyelid? Or eyeball

Craig Yes Dr Tseng said my ocular surface was not smooth so my tears could not spread evenly so the AMT surgery seemed to have solved that problem. I can't answer your question about poor tear quality and a ruffled up conjunctiva. I also had a blocked or swollen tear duct and had a tube or stent placed in the upper and lower tear ducts by an oculoplastic surgeon. It stayed in for 3 months and seems to have worked because I do not have the tears welling up.

Drynyc The inflammation was on the eye. AMT is used to make a smooth ocular surface. I don't think it is used on the eyelid.
