  • When do you apply eyelid moisturiser?

I have to apply Hycosan Original artificial tears 3 times a day as well as Vaseline as an eyelid moisturiser. I'm not sure which order to do it in though.

    At night, should I:

A, Wash my face and eyelids, apply Vaseline to face and eyelids, apply Hycosan Original artificial tears, wait 30 minutes, apply Hycosan Night eye ointment, and go to sleep.

This is what the YouTube video 'Do You Have Dry Eyes? | Eye Doctor Recommends This Dry Eye Nighttime Routine' by Eye School with Dr D recommends.

B, Wash my face and eyelids, apply Hycosan Original artificial tears, wait 30 minutes, apply Hycosan Night eye ointment, apply Vaseline to face and eyelids with eyes closed, and go to sleep.

    This is what ChatGPT recommends.

I personally found option B best for me, applying eyelid moisturizer last, right before going to sleep. Less chance of the moisturizer getting into my eyes.

I’ve tried applying moisturizer before my drops, but often my eyes sting a little doing that because pulling my eyelids to insert the drops, blinking, blotting my eyes with tissue, etc. can cause some of the moisturizer to get into my eyes. Plus I put eye moisturizer on both my upper eyelids and below my eyes, so higher chance of some seeping into my eyes, stinging and compromising the effectiveness of the drops.

Where around the eyelid area are you supposed to put eyelid moisturiser, Vaseline in my case, so that it's safe?

I've started washing my eyelids and soap and using warm compresses, and I don't want the eyelid skin to get dry.

      What do you do personally?

You can use a preservative-free nighttime eye lubricant instead of Vaseline, like Systane Nighttime which is 94% white petroleum and 3% mineral oil. My ophthalmologist had me use this instead of Vaseline or Aquaphor on my upper and lower eyelids which used to get dry from all the washing and warm compresses I used to do. This is because Systane Nighttime is mainly the same ingredients as Vaseline and Aquaphor, but is also preservative-free since it’s meant to put directly in your eyes in the first place as a night lubricant, so it’s ok if it gets in your eyes.

No matter if I use Systane Nighttine or now an eye cream around my eyes, I always put it at least a 1/2 centimeter away from my lash line and make sure to use a minimal amount and pat it on so my skin absorbs it well, which also limits any excess getting into my eyes.

I have two eye gels I use. One is for nighttime and is more liquid. I use it after my restasis. The other is thicker and I use it after shower or washing face etc, and after restasis and any other drops. I use them mostly for the condition of skin around my eyes though and I can't remember what I did when I first had the dry eye now. I didn't use outer moisture to help the dry eye it was for my skin and the condition of it etc.

These are the ones I use, I had to switch because the only one I could use was discontinued, body shop chamomile eye gel I think along with their chamomile eye cleanser. When I run out of that I don't know what I will use to cleanse eye make now. I hardly ever wear it now, so I don't use much.

I use the generic pharmacy versions of the old cetaphil gentle for body and face, which was also discontinued after 40 years or so.. ugh. and the occu soft foam to cleanse my eyes in the shower when I get up. Then the other stuff and the outer eye gels last and before any eye make up.

The night time gel is Asterwood matryxl 3000 Argeline purchased on Amazon for about $15-20. The day time gel is RoC multi correction hydrate cream with hyaluronic acid and peptides- this one really helps my puffing and lines which have gotten worse as I age. I guess it may help with the dry eye too, I'm not sure. I get that at Costco, 3 tubes when on sale, about $29 which last more than a year because I don't use very much.

For some reason my post was flagged as spam by an auto system maybe because I name the eye gels/prices where I purchase that I use, I don't know. I was saying when I had dry at first I didn't use outer moisture except my usual eye gel then which didn't seem to help at all. Now I use two gels for sensitive eyes just for my skin... one for night and one for day which thicker and helps my puffiness and lines. Everything gets applied after washing etc, restasis and any other drops, then make up is last. I wait until the drops have settled and then until the gel drys before applying any makeup but I rarely wear any now. Only mascara and eye liner.

At the time mine was severe I wore no eye make and only used the one gel which is now discontinued sadly. My eyes were always super sensitive to anything my entire life but I never had dry eye until I started getting type 1 diabetes.

I don't know if the gels I use help the dry eye at all really because I started on restasis and have been on that for many years now. I'm so much better with it but I still get flair ups in seasonal changes. And now with drops and ointment several times a day for conjunctivitis in one eye I'm a bit irritated from them. They told me to do the restasis drops 5 minutes after the drops for the infection.
