For some people plugs do help. It’s usually one of the earlier treatments done. Some people in this forum have found plugging both the upper and lower ducts even more helpful.

Silicone plugs initially seemed to work for me for a few weeks, but then my eyes got used to them and it was not as beneficial anymore. I’ve heard that happened to other people too. But I still had them for years, until one slipped down into the duct and I got a major infection where I almost had to have surgery to remove it. So my eye doctor instead had me use dissolving plugs that I had to replace every three months or so, but I think on one side the duct had expanded from using plugs all those years, so I couldn’t have them anymore. I was worried taking that away would make my eyes a lot drier, which it did initially, but then my eyes got used to not having them. But this was after I had been able to manage the dryness better with diet and the regimen that worked for me, so it wasn’t too bad that I had to stop using plugs.
