Hello folks, from Melbourne, Australia. I have not been on this forum for several years, as my dry eyes has been well managed with a little bit of steroid eye drops weekly and eye pressure monitored. However, something happened last month that has caused a return of my sore, burning eyes and is now a distressing drama for me. I am hoping someone out there might have a similar experience, a comment or advice.
I developed some small white cysts or what the ophthalmologist called "concretions" on my lower eyelids. Two on the outside of both lower lids and one on the INNER surface of the left eye. The ophthalmologist agreed to remove them as I was concerned they might cause problems down the track. It was a minor procedure, the lower lids were injected with anaesthetic by the ophthalmologist and the cysts microsurgically removed. Unfortunately, ever since, my eyes have been sore and burning. It has been 4 weeks since the procedure now and they are still sore, and I cannot work out why? I haven't bothered going back to the ophthalmologist because, frankly, I'm not sure she would know why. I do find that steroid anti-inflammatories (Prednisolone forte) stops the pain.
I cannot work out what has happened but have two ideas:
1) The ophthalmologist might have damaged my meibomian glands. I went to my local Optometrist (a dry eye specialist) here in Melbourne, who checked via meibography. He was able to compare now vs 5 years ago vs 10 years ago, as he had that data for me. He concluded that the meibographies were all very similar, so damage to the glands seemed unlikely. Well, at least based on morphology. He did caution, though, that studies show no correlation between meibography data and symptoms of dry eye reported by patients. I looked that up, and yes, he is right!
I am going to get a Lipiview analysis next week, as that might be informative.
2) Chromic Inflammation caused by the minor surgery 4 weeks ago? The ophthalmologist only did surgery on the lower lids, but could there be induced inflammation that - after 4 weeks - still hasn't gone down?? Mast cells and histamines? My eyes are not red at all, they look fine, but they sting almost constantly without steroid eye drops. Its getting quite distressing.
Whatever has happened, it was caused by the minor procedure done by the ophthalmologist, but I cannot work out what ?
Thanks very much for any advice,
Craig
