I agree with Irisheyes, it depends on what kind of cyst it is.

I've done it both ways...got rid of a chalazion through compresses and gland expression, and also had one removed surgically because I (mistakenly) thought it was the cause of eye pain I was experiencing at the time.

But it really does depend on the clinical diagnosis - is it a "could" or a "must"?

only way to find out is to ask a specialist.

The GP said it was a meibomium cyst and that I could leave it there if i didnt want surgery- but it us noticeable so i do want to get rid of it. It is inside my upper eyelid so i cant see it if i invert my eyelid.

I have read lots of reviews on the uses of epsom salts for cysts- should i give this a try? I don't know if it's a good idea to try and draw the cyst out, am afriad it going to get worse.

I'm seeing a specialist next week- i'll let you know what he says.

Eva b- what is gland expression? I tried hot compresses but it seems like it makes the cyst worse- it appears larger and slightly red? Maybe this is supposed to happen as the hot compresses is supposed to draw it out i guess.

gland experession is literally squeezing the meibomian glands inside the eyelids (from the outside of course - they don't turn the lids inside out) to get the sluggish, thick fluid moving and prevent it clogging and forming cysts. It has certainly helped me prevent recurrences and keep them functioning.

Unfortunately, not many docs are prepared to do this procedure - it's time consuming and I guess they just don't make much money from it. I know Dr Latkany in NY does it.

Hot compresses can certainly help to soften and meibomian cyst and draw it out - although once it's got past a certain stage I don't know how possible thaat is. Your specialist should be able to give you better info.

          best of luck!

I know it's been awhile since you last posted about your cyst but I just wanted to know if you were able to get rid of it? Did you opt for surgery? Or did you end up using a completely different method? thankss
