  • My trip to the corneal specialist

I got my upper holes plugged! I was surprised I didn't even have to beg him. Last time I asked he said he NEVER plugs the uppers because if you tear too much they are too hard to remove. But I think he didn't expect my dryness to last this long. I'm at the 16 month mark since lasik and they are still dry so I guess that is why he offered me the uppers. He examined my eyes and said that although they are dry they don't look that dry and that there has been no damage to the cells on the eyes. That is good news. He didn't do another schimers test which I was bummed about because I was curious to see where my numbers are now, it's been almost a year since my last one and I know there has been some improvement since then. He said after pushing on my eye lids that my oils were a bit thick and suggested doing the hot compresses 2 x a day. He said my tears were probably evaporating more quickly because of this. Knowing that I am surprised he plugged all my punctum because I thought people with tear oil issues shouldn't be plugged? But he said mine was not that thick. They also dialated me and driving home was crazy!!! Obviously I was dialated WAY past my lasik flap and it was like I had my own fireworks show on the way home. I had humungous star bursts on every light. I could barely make it home although they told me I could drive. I think they weren't taking in the fact that I am a lasik patient and that the lights would be an issue. So now I have been home a few hours and I can tell my eyes are wetter. I had all 4 done with temporary plugs last year and I didn't have this level of wetness. But my eyes were much drier immediately post surgery. I am hoping they won't be too wet but if they are I am still going to hang with this since I think I would rather be too wet than too dry. I have been yawning a lot and that is when I can really tell there is nowhere for the tears to drain. I hope come tomorrow I still notice at least a little more moisture than I had before. Any amount of improvement would be a blessing. So I will keep you guys posted on how this goes..thank you for all your advice and suggestions!

Hi LL......sorry about the trip home with fireworks. You may not know exactly how your eyes will be for a week or even two weeks. It takes me awhile for things to settle in. I hope the uppers are the key to your comfort. A long time ago, I had ephiphora with all 4 plugs in and it WAS a pain. I was always dobbing my eyes at work and people thought I was crying. This went on for quite awhile and then stopped at some time, with no apparent reason. The overflow is a nuisance, but nothing more. The opposite is a pain. Lucy

Yes, please do keep us posted on your progress. I too am interested in getting my upper tear ducts plugged. It sounds like it might be helping you. I would be greatful for ANY relief.
