  • Corneal Erosion - How to stop /reverse it ?

My eyes are worsening..dryness increasing...and I can see in the mirror that around the cornea there is visible erosion.

How can i stop it getting any worse or make it better.

    I drop every 10 minutes..have to..eyes are plugged and cauterized...what else can I do..?

I also use tranquil eyes at night...wake up with stuck lids though every morning)

I use chamber goggles during day.

    Thx for any help

I would see a doctor right away.

    Hi, Why.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It sounds like you are having a really rough time. Mine never got bad enough for me to see. Did your doctor tell you anything specific? Is it an erosion or has it become infected or ulcerated?

If you can see the damage, I would get straight to a doctor.

Here are things that helped me when my erosions were the worst:

    1. I used Muro 128 5% drops for a month. The first three hours that I started using it, I noticed a difference. I used those drops four times each day for a month and used the ointment at night for the first two weeks. Healing started right after that.

    2. I slept in a reclining chair, so that my head would stabilize. This kept the erosions from waking me up at night during REM or when I would move my head in my sleep. My head was very stabilized. During that time, I also set the alarm for every two hours and re-applied either ointment or Genteal Gel. Gradually, I was able to set the alarm for three, then four hours. Now, I just get up once each night.

    3. If the Muro does not work, try Dwelle! It is better, imo, gentler on the eye, and more effective at stopping the erosions.

Really, really, I want to stress that you may need an antibiotic drop. See a doctor. If you can see the problem on your cornea, it must be quite serious, painful, and may be threatening to your vision if it is in the pupil area.

I hope that things can turn around for you!

Have you tried Restasis? My doctor says if my tear plugs are not enough, we will move on to Restasis. He said we cannot let this go for eye health reasons. Certainly sounds like you need something more.

        Hi Liz

        Thx for your reply.
Im seeing an Ophthal tomorrow short notice.
I cant see ulceration however soreness is constant and they are becoming also painful more than annoying.

Will see what he says..Ive also got a migrated plug to talk about.

Unfortunately Im in Australia so Murin and Dwelle are not available.

        Hi thx for your reply

Restasis is not readily available in Australia..it is not approved by the TGA (Australia's version of FDA)

Australia seems like a backward nation when it comes to eye drugs..and others I wont go into here.

Will see what the Ophthal says tomorrow.

I hope he can do something

          corneal ulcers

Restasis has given me optimism about my own corneal erosion and hope for the future. It has even allowed me to quit the warm compresses/lid scrubs. I was performing the warm compresses up to five times a day.

If it is suitable for your eye condition, could you import drugs or drops via the internet?

            Hi Everyone

Just back from the Ophthal...not very good.

He thinks the plug that mhas migrated is working and wants to leave it alone.
I dont think it is working ..at least not very well.

He says that Loteprednol is the drug that might help me.
A well tolerated steroid drop apparently...

But guess what...yet again it its not available in Australia !

Id like to cry ..if only I could get tears !

            Australia Australia Australia...letting me down...

So Ive come away with nothing...

I see another specialist in May the best in the country..but I guess it does not help if Restasis or Loteprednol cannot be prescribed...woe is me.

Sorry to sound fed up..but i am.
Im spending 20 dollars a day just on drops to get by..and now i know there is no help.

Wishing the best of luck to others with this...an praying for a treatment to come our way soon.

              Hi, Why.

I'm sorry to hear that it did not go well. Have you looked into whether Clinitas Ultra 3 is available there in Australia? It is the UK version of Dr. Holly's Freshkote, which is a lot like Dwelle but with a lipid added. It is just called a different name in the UK. It might be worth checking out.

                Hi Liz

Clinitas Ultra 3 is not available in Australia..not sure if I can get imported or not.

at the moment Im using the thick celluvisc..
Ophthal told me my Shirmers test was 0 & 5 left & right..no wonder my left eye is struggling.

                Will keep looking

                Thanks for your support.

                  Why

In Australia you have access to both Genteal Gel and Viscotears but fortunately you also have access to the generic versions of these.

I used to buy them from the Costigan's Discount Pharmacy but I am sure you can get them elsewhere.

They are identical products manufactured by Nouvartis.

The generic for Genteal Gel is HPMC PAA and the generic for Viscotears is PAA

They both sell for about $6 each, they are not preservative free but you can buy a preservative free version of viscotears from the pharmacy.

My erosions were caused through LASEK but I managed to get it largely undercontrol using viscotears and taping my eyes closed of a night.

It is a horrible problem but I hope you get it sorted soon.

                  Regards

                  Ian

                    Hi thanks Ian

                    Thankyou for replying.

This is a horrible problem..at least I know Im not alone in the fight for health..thanks for your support.

I do use Genteal Gel at night always...however it does tend to stick my eyelashes together ..noticable when you wake up...needing flushing or warm water compress to tease the eyelids apart.

The gel didnt seem to work very long during the day..no better than Celluvisc and is more difficult to apply when out as opposed to head back dropping.

                    All my Best.

I agree that gel is not the best solution during the day due to difficulty in application.

You could try taping your eyes closed of a night, Ii did this for 6 months and whilst I hated every moment of it, it seems to have helped me through an horrendeous period.

On waking, I used to keep a little steripod of non preserved saline solution by the bed and would squirt my closed taped eyes before even attempting to open them.

you can get non preserved saline in Oz as well, they are quite expensive but you can buy a bottle of it from the pharmacy (for rinsing burns etc).

I completely understand your position and I can only empathise with you as I have been there also.

I wish you well and hope that you can get this under control.

                      Regards

                      Ian
