  • Unpredictability of corneal erosions - contributing factors

I'd like to hear if anyone has theories of contributing factors to corneal erosions.

Here are the risk factors I've noticed:
    • Drinking alcohol, particularly red wine
    • Late nights
    • Sleeping with the heating on

I posted a while ago that I had an erosion on my birthday, and Prattstar said so did he, and I also had one in Paris this year the day before I ran the half-marathon there - is it possible that states of nervous excitement could be a contributing factor?

That's a good point. My corneal specialist said that stress could be a factor.

My only erosions this year (since January 2008) were when I had my Tranquileyes goggles on too tightly. Other than that, I could not really pin it down. It seemed like it was too unpredictable to find a pattern.

Can I ask what does a corneal erosion look like?

You can't see anything apart from redness, I think the epithelium is too thin for you to be able see anything with the naked eye.

Okay, thanks, Mcgoldilocks! I have a call into my doc regarding the redness, pain, etc and it is mostly my pterygium flaring up. Sorry to take everyone off track!

Definitely alcohol. Central heating on even in the evening. Sitting in a draught.
Restless nights. Sudden waking e.g. burgular alarm going off
