extreme gritiness and clear gooey stuff

so, today is seems my eyes are extremely gritty. more so than normal. I also noticed I have some clear thick goo in my eye, a very small amount, that was causing some blurryness of vision. any ideas as to what this is?

to add to this. I noticed underneath my eyelids (right before the eyelid margin) I had extreme redness.. Is this normal? If not, what could be some possbile causes? I also notice my eyelids show now, when they used to now. Here is a pic to help describe

Those symptoms for me, mean that I will wake up with bacterial pink eye in the morning.
