Hi Kim, mucous is caused by the oil touching the mucous layer in the eye when the water layer lacks. When there is excess oil, there will be more mucous. I am puzzled as to why Dr Latkany always attributes it to allergies? Allergies is also a cause, but not always the cause.

Kim, I have never had mucous in my eyes since my lasik surgery almost 9 years ago. Not much before that.....just a little dot of sleep in the corner of my eye in the a.m. sometimes.
After all this time, I still do not have mucous in my eyes. I don't want a bunch which some people have, but I wish for a little and it might make my eyes feel better. Oddly enough some have too much, others none. LucyDon't trust any refractive surgeon with YOUR eyes.

I have spoken with many eye care providers on this issue. The majority indicate they "believe" it is inflammation related. My wife has been on a new drop for about seven months now and after the first 90 days she has had only one mucous string. These used to be a regular occurrence for her. So my personal experience would indicate it is more related to inflammation than allergy.

I will clarify, mucous is a result when the oil touches the dry spots on the eye so it comes directly in contact with the mucous layer, resulting in mucous strings or mucous. This is fact from the opthamoligist. Mika, that is why you get no mucous when use oitment, becuase it prevents the oil layer from touching the mucous layer.

Been There...
For nearly a month, I had extreme case of mucus under the eyelids and it literally would drive me crazy. I would go to the doctor three times a week just to get the matter removed. Finally, I was sent to a specialist who perscribed a compound named Acetylcysteine 10% Ophalm. Drops. I use them four times each day and the mucus goes away... Ask your doctor.
