  • Chlamydia causes conjunctivitis - experiences?

    Hey there!

I saw some specialists at a university hospital last week.

They made a lot of tests such as schimers etc. and came to the conclusion (or the assumption) that I have "conjunctivitis caused by a chronic infection with chlamydia, which leads to my bad iflammations."

Finally, they prescribed me antibiotic eyedrops I have to take, and although I've taken them for 7 days so far the drops show no impact on my inflammation or anything in regard to my dry eye symptoms.

    Any experiences with similar cases?

    greetings,
    maximus!

Hmmm. Chalmydial conjuctivitis is usually treated systemically, with azithromycin rather than eye drops. How did they diagnose this?

They did a mucosal smear test and told me chlamydia were the cause.

According to the doctor, chlamydia destabilize the tear layer and decrease the tear production.

Well that is pretty good news since you can treat it. I would ask them about oral antibiotics vs the eye drops.

          Wow, good to hear, thanks!

However, I don't really believe that this diagnose is correct...the time will show

I have a lot of experience with chlamydia. When my eyes got really worse 4 years ago I changed doctors and they found out I had a chlamydia infection. I got antibiotic drops and ointment. Almost every time I get my eyes tested now a chlamydia infection is found - they just come back all the time and I don't know why. I got tested gynecological several times but nothing was found. So I take antibiotics from time to time and that's all. My eyes are always bad no matter if the chlamydia are there or not...

well, my dry eye story started with chlamydia 15 yrs ago. But it was different. It was not just inflammation. Chlamydia caused my such an awful eye-infection that my eyes were swollen shut and festering. It took a month or so before doctors found out what was causing the infection and gave me oral antibiotics (maybe eye drops too, I don't remember). But my eyes were damaged and they were never the same again. I saw many-many doctors during these years and nobody told me that all this irritation, redness and discomfort was all because of dryness. They said it was allergy or just gave me some dexametazone eyedrops to manage inflammation but these made the dryness even worse afterwards. I struggled all my college years and the years after... Just recently I started to investigate this dry eye thing and found this site. And I am so grateful. Now I do hot compresses and it really works I wish I had known about this life saving treatment years ago Now I am still very sensitive to dust and inflammation follows (but it is not typical allergy, because just any dust causes it because of dryness). But most of the time I feel comfortable. Unfortunately this experience has completely destroyed my faith in doctors.
Chlamydia is tricky. It is difficult to diagnose. And after you have had it something stays in your blood (I don't know the word in English)and it is up to doctor to interpret if the disease is active or already over.

                  Hello,
I have been detected with DNA test from eyes - Chlamydia Trahomatis positive. I don't have established infection in the body, no antibodies and the DNA test is negative.
Both eyes are inflamed and infected, but the one is more and it is a big problem. I'm treated with a topical antibiotic belonging to the quinolone - twice courses for 2 weeks. It is better but still the infection is not gone. Some of you have any experience? To continue now only local for 3th course or to be taken and internal antibiotics scheme and for how long?
                  Thank you!

Very interesting! My blood results STILL show I have this, my doctor thinks I contracted it from an insect bite (yes! Ticks carry viruses! Not all the dieases in the chymidia group are STDs) (just saying that incase it helps anyone reading to look into this as I'd never of known) Which antibiotics will they treat you with please?(doxycycline by chance?) could you kindly give me the name of the test that diagnosed you? Was it an eye swab?
