Scleral Lens in the uk

Hi,

I have dry eyes and corneal neuropathy. The CN is in my right eye, each time i blink it hurts my cornea.
I think that having a vault over my cornea will let it heal compared to the constant mechanical motion of the lid blinking and irritating the cornea.

Is it possible to get these lenses on the NHS or do i need to go private?

In my experience the local NHS eye hospital has been terrible for corneal neuropthy pain, they dont know about it.

I would agree with you re NHS being poor at looking after dry eye patients. Sorry don’t know about scleral lenses. Hopefully someone will post an answer soon.

Yes to both. Problem for you with the NHS is finding a hospital consultant who takes you and your condition seriously and then will refer you for lenses. I know people who have. The fitting process is also hit and miss on the NHS with a limited number of lenses available.

Going privately is a good option if you can afford the costs.

Roughly what are the costs for a private scleral lens in the UK? Specifically for someone who has had laser eye surgery before.

I was speaking to an eye specialist a couple of days ago who told me that scleral lens can range from £1,500 to £4,000.
I'm not sure if that was for the pair, but that was my assumption.

I’m going through the fitting process now with the NHS. I have severe dry eye and ingrowing lashes caused by SJS 30 years ago. I’m currently wearing my first pair and can wear them for about 10 hours before they become a bit uncomfortable. I do still need lots of drops to rewet them during the day, but my corneas are feeling better.
