I’ve been needing to get my eyes checked, but I’m a bit overwhelmed with the choices for eye doctors in my area. I’m not sure whether to see an optometrist or an ophthalmologist first. Also, how do you evaluate which doctor is reliable and thorough?

Are there specific questions I should ask during the first appointment? I’m particularly concerned about long-term eye health and preventing vision problems.

Any advice on what to look for, red flags, or personal experiences with eye doctors would be really helpful.

These are all good questions. It was as confusing as could be for me when I had some suddenly developing symptoms in late 2024 and early 2025. I feel insurance companies don't point you to the right place and I was lucky to get a referral to a specialist via a second opinion from an ophthalmologist.
