Tension headaches are muscular in origin. I have both tension and TMJ headaches. When I take amitriptyline/Elavil, the headaches are much less severe and less frequent. Nortriptyline is a cousin of amitriptyline, also used for chronic pain. It has fewer side effects than amitriptyline, so it might be a better choice. Much is trial and error, it just depends on what works for you.
