  • MGD as a result of LASIKS?

I had LASIKS in 2007. I had the normal dryness, which gradually went away. Every once in a while I would need eyedrops, usually just upon waking in the morning or if it was a really windy, dry day. In 2009 I began having a foreign body sensation in my eye. I went to the optometrist and he told me I had dry eyes and to keep using eyedrops. Fast forward to about 6 months ago. I was at work and my eyes went completely dry. After visiting 5 different doctors I finally got diagnosed with MGD/posterior blepharitis. My question is, does LASIKS lead to MGD/posterior blepharitis or was this a pre-existing condition I already had? All of the doctors I've been to don't believe the two are connected, but they all promote LASIKS and I wonder if they are biased. I should add this past year has been very stressful and I've been studying quite a bit with and intense intership (which I almost had to give up because of the pain), accompanied by poor eating habits, lack of sleep, and too much coffee.

And as a side note, thank you all. I'm sorry you are suffering, but this website has been a blessing. I don't know how I would have made it through some days without being able to read inspirational stories and being able to get the products I need for my dry eyes.

    hi lacey,

sorry to see you're struggling so much with your condition, but anyway welcome here!
this site is by far the best source of information you can find anywhere on the worldwide net.
the similarity with my situation is striking!
i had lasek in 2005 and i was fine the first few years. than gradually the dry eye issue kicked in and has gotten worse over time untill now.
i had the same diagnosis (posterior blepharitis). this was probably a pre-existing condition and my opinion is that the lasek procedure has for 100% sure made things worse.
i've been on a regimen of flaxeedoil, warm compresses, lidscrubs and eyelid massage for ages now and it has paid of in a sense that my opthalmologist says now she cannot see any clinical signs of dry eye anymore. tbut is more or less ok and not very much water deficient.
the downside however is that this improvement does not correlate with my symptoms. the pain i experience is to my opinion still increasing while my clinical signs are much lesser than they were before.
my opthalmologist even has difficulties believing i'm in so much pain on a daily basis. thats very frustrating. people begin to think you have a mental problem. which i most certainly do not have!
you can for sure find some useful info about treatmentoptions here and also a lot of caring people who are willing to listen to your story and share their experiences...

Yeap, same thing. My optometrist is pleased with the "progress" I have made. Everything has improved (TBUT, little thread test...not sure what it's called, and no dry spots on my eyes) with the use of fish oil, curcumin complex, multivitamin, NAC, Bio Tears, sea buckthorn berry oil, hyaluronic acid, daily warm compress and lid scrubs, but I'm still very uncomfortable to say the least. I just finished an intense internship in a hospital lab and I'm hoping for a great career, but afraid I won't be able to work in the field because of the use of microscopes and being in highly ventilated rooms.

Many people I talk to think I'm crazy and overexaggerating because my eyes look glossy. I even find myself looking in the mirror throughout the day to double check that they are in fact moist. It's so frustrtating. I don't ever remember my doctor checking my eyes before the surgery for dryness or mentioning this as a long term side effect. Well now I'm trying a health food kick and hoping maybe my eyes and body will be able to heal themselves.

Thank you for your response Patrick.
