Have spent weeks waking up through the night with the awful MGD pain.
Had tried several eye drops - last one was Optive - and several Viscotears products.
Read about Systane and asked my GP (in UK) whether I could try it.
Have only used it for three nights, so this may be a little premature, but I have had incredible results. Woke with the pain only once on the first night and slept through until 7 on next nights. I am now keeping my finger crossed.
The Systane drops I was prescribed are presesrvative free in single dose plastic capsules however you can twist off the cap and replace it after the first dose. One of these lasts me throughout a day (and night). I think it would be wasteful to throw away the capsule after a single dose.
Another thing I have found, since coping with this nightly pain, is to try not to open your eyes immediately on waking or feeling the pain. If I keep the lids close and massage gently for a while and then open my eyes then the discomfort is not as bad. Its not always easy to do this of course.
I will update on the Systane after using it for a further length of time.
Good Luck to others if you try it.
