  • Ocular Rosacea and scleral lenses...

I'm just wondering if anyone with ocular rosacea has had any success with PROSE or other scleral lenses. I'm curious to know if they can help reduce inflammation and redness of the eye (the eyeball itself, not the lid) or if they've made it worse for anyone. Any information/experiences would be great. Thanks!

      HI Alison

I have MGD and dry eye, specialist said no rosacea. I don't agree. I think there is to much redness in my eyes for them just to be "dry" But anyway I am getting mini scleral lenses fitted in Canada in June. I don't think they are as good as the Boston lense but this option is all I can afford right now. I will also let you know how it goes. Wish I had them right now lol time takes forever when you are waiting for comfort, IF (that is a big if) they even help me.

I have both ATD and MGD, and probably corneal neuropathy too, but for me, the MGD was the aspect of the disease responsible for my pain and discomfort. My ATD is pretty well managed by cautery in all 4 puncta. The Prose lenses have been an absolute miracle for me. Logically with MGD they should help- if you think about it MGD supposedly causes pain because of the rapid evaporative loss of tears off the cornea and the development of dry spots- and holding tears on your cornea with a plastic cover no matter how bad your MGD is should help. At least for me I didn't find that the lenses irritated my eyelids. My eyeballs themselves are less red but not perfect- they get red in the evenings. This also may be due to the fact that the CCH surgery I had last summer left me with permanent spots of increased redness in both eyes.

I go to my Dr this Friday- he can tell me whether my MGD is truly worse after wearing the lenses- but my eyes feel so much better!

I don't think they have reduced my inflammation but certainly my comfort level because my eyeball is protected with a bath of saline. They do seem to make my eyes whiter but I think that may be a bit of constriction. I have some scarring on my eyeball and the edge of the contact rests on it, even with adjustment to make the contacts comfortable. So, while I wear them, my eyes look whiter but, when I remove them, it takes a few hours, even an entire evening for my eyes to be a normal red for me.

Thanks for the replies everyone - sorry I missed your post before Faith (good luck too!) - it looks like I was typing when you were replying. I see my doc in a few weeks and I'm going to ask him about them and see if I can get a referral to get some. It sounds like they are definitely worth trying.

I tried mini sclerals and they didnt help at all. I am really hoping Boston Prose are better.
