Rhad, many people are extremely sensitive to diet sweetener chemicals, so drinking plain water as a "control" in your experiment would probably be more scientifically sound than drinking Diet Mountain Dew.
I know several people with IBS that do much better once they quit using diet drinks and sweeteners. This is something that I pay attention to, because I have Sjogren's---an inflammatory disease that has multiple symptoms: dry eyes, IBS, dry mouth, joint pain, etc. In an effort to lessen my own chronic inflammation, I gave up gluten, dairy, and coffee (but not caffeine). It's been over a year since I did that, and it's maybe helping. I'm not sure, though. My eyes have been better for the last 6 months.
