Rhad, many people are extremely sensitive to diet sweetener chemicals, so drinking plain water as a "control" in your experiment would probably be more scientifically sound than drinking Diet Mountain Dew.

I know several people with IBS that do much better once they quit using diet drinks and sweeteners. This is something that I pay attention to, because I have Sjogren's---an inflammatory disease that has multiple symptoms: dry eyes, IBS, dry mouth, joint pain, etc. In an effort to lessen my own chronic inflammation, I gave up gluten, dairy, and coffee (but not caffeine). It's been over a year since I did that, and it's maybe helping. I'm not sure, though. My eyes have been better for the last 6 months.

Wow, Calli, I'm really glad to hear that your eyes improved so much.
I've been off of dairy, gluten, and soy for the past 5 months but, unfortunately, it's made no difference in my eyes. I cut out corn two weeks ago, too, but still no diff. I haven't had any sugar in years, although I do eat a lot of fruit. Perhaps I'll look into that.

Rhad, here is something else to consider. Since you stated that bananas irritate you, and I think they irritate me, I looked to see what is in bananas that may cause this. I know nothing about Salicylate or Amines, but they are in many of the foods we eat and they can cause intolerance's. Bananas are an issue when they are rip as the Amine/Salicylates level increases. Look at this list. I don't think it is as simple as eliminating one or two things, but it is a cascade of things. Eating healthy does not eliminate intolerances. Some of the healthiest foods can have high levels of Salicylate or Amines. This may or may not mean anything. A symptom, with no scientific evidence, is swelling of the eyes in the second article.

When salicylates block the production of prostaglandins, more leukotrienes are produced instead, becoming a problem for people who are sensitive to leukotrienes. Until very recently, research focused on the role of leukotrienes in aspirin-sensitive asthma, but it is now realized that leukotrienes are involved in a wide range of inflammatory conditions. This is from the third article. Also there is a testimonial on how bananas(Salicylates) increased eczema(the point here is that it causes inflammation in intolerant people).

Fish oil, GLA block AA from forming inflammatory prostgladins, but healthy foods high in Salicylates or Amines form leukotrienes which cause inflammation in intolerant/sensitive people overriding the effect of fish oil? Damn, I wish I was a scientist.
