My eyes are hurting so much lately... I spend a lot of time being angry with eye docs. Then I found a thought that whilst not exactly positive and healthy, actually makes me smile. I don't remember where it came from or even if it was an original thought.
Most ophthalmologists are men, right? And most sufferers of dry eye, especially severe dry eye, are women, right?
So, dry eye hurts us women in the most sensitive part of our body. What if there wasn't a dry eye syndrome but instead a syndrome that only affected men... in the most sensitive part of their anatomy?
Can you imagine if there was a very common disease that made men experience the pain and sensations we do, in a different part of their body? Can you imagine if men spent all day with the burning, itching, the urge to rub certain parts of their body, the stabbing pains... along with erosions and maybe ulcerations and inflammation and scarring, plus at times excessive "reflex" discharge at inconvenient times, like whilst doing a presentation at work. Imagine these guys having to clean the crust off with q-tips and baby shampoo several times a day. Having severe redness and enlarged veins that made people ask "what happened to your..." and really affected the man's self esteem and made him just want to hide at home. Feeling like he always had sand in there... having to use cold compresses and lubricants at his desk at work all day (co-workers giggling and talking about him).
If this disease happened in this way to men... we would probably have a cure already... and it would have a much more serious sounding name than "dry" and everyone would understand and sympathise and there would be so much help available for these poor guys...
We can only dream. (No offense intended to male dry eye sufferers)
