  • New eye pain (for me at least) something to be worried about??

So today my right eye (I NEVER have problems with my right eye btw), the outer corner to be exact started to feel really sore. Like, it hurts when I blink. The pain I can best desrcribe is the pain you feel if you've been punched in the eye and its swollen so it hurts to blink.

I actually thought my boyfriend may have hit my eye in his sleep but looking at it, I looked inside my lower lid and stuff, and its very red and irritated, it's also the slightest bit swollen. When I push on the outer corner, its a bit painful. It's not like deathly pain, but its annoying and its raising concern for me on whether this is something I need to call my cornea specialist (who I don't see till next thursday). I have no clue what this could be; is it an infection of some sort (which i hope not, I'm already getting a LOT of anxiety about this, are my glands blocked, maybe my boyfriend really did nail me in the eye while we were asleep.

I'm just not sure if this is normal for someone with dry eyes, I've heard of pain in the eye but I was under the assumption the eye pain was more nuerological (sp) and that the eye pain felt more like a head ache than actual pain and swollenness.

Any insight on this would be great and I figured if this pain doesn't subside in a few days, of course to call the doc, but as with all of us, our eyes are important; so if this is something I should be worried about I want to nip this in the butt as soon as i can to prevent further damage.

Could be getting a sty. I was talking with someone recently who got one - a BIG one - quite suddenly, and it was very painful. I'd call the doc's office, describe it and see if they feel you should come in.

Thank you Rebecca, I will do this first thing in the morning if the pain is still there/worse.

Not sure if this helps, Vivian, but I had a very similar sounding pain in my left eye (the one that's usually better!) a couple of weeks ago. It was really sore in the outer corner - not really on my eye surface, but more like in the lower lid - it was painful to blink and it was watering quite a bit.

It just went away in a couple of days - my optometrist looked at the area and couldn't see anything wrong. He did suggest that artificial tears can 'pool' in certain areas and cause irritation, but I'm not really convinced this was the problem.

Still no idea what it was, but if it comes back I will try not to worry so much.

well I woke up and my whole right eye lid is now swollen (like I've been crying all night) I called my cornea specialist's nurse and she told me that it is a clogged gland, and that if I take care of it now it won't turn into a sty. and that all I can pretty much do is warm compresses as much as I can until it's gone. :/

This one swollen eyelid is pretty unsightly.

Anyone have any tips on what they do for this kind of thing other than hot comnpresses?

Another question...if this doesnt turn into a sty....is this a sign of blehparitis?? I have never gotten diagnosed with it, but I don't quite know the difference between all this....

hey colin! she also mentioned a Chalazion?? i'm not sure what that is either but from what i looked on this site http://www.livestrong.com/article/24...wollen-eyelid/

I don't have a lump or anything, it's just swollen and hurts!

I'm just confused on how many times i need to put a warm compress on (i made a homemade rice bag with some rice and a sock). She told me as much as I can, but I work from like 2pm till 10pm at night. I can try to do it on break i guess.

I'm new to this site and to my blepharitis diagnosis, so I don't know if this is helpful or not. However, other than my eyes burning over the last few years (doctor thought mild eye infections due to sinus issues), I did not have any major problems until this May when the same thing happened to me. All of a sudden one evening my eye started watering, the whole eye socket felt like someone punched me, it got red and swollen and then felt like possibly something had flown into my eye and scratched it. I went to the doctor the next day when I got up and eye was worse and was told that it looked like something flew in my eye and scratched it in a couple places. I was given sulpher drops and an antibiotic for possible infection. I eventually developed a stye where I thought my eye had been scratched. When the stye did not go away I went to a specialist who diagnosed me with blepharitis. Chalazion (which I had) is a stye that is a small lump in the eyelid caused by a blocked oil producing gland. Chalazia may occur in the upper or lower lids commonly causing redness, swelling and soreness. I'm quoting from the pamphlet the doctor gave me. In early stages the chalazia or stye may be treated with repeated use of warm compresses for 15-20 minutes followed by a light lid massage as they told you. I never really used the compresses, although I do wash my eyelashes and massage them every morning and was given Doxycycline and prescription eye gel. The stye finally went away or is at least smaller now, however it still hurts - so I don't know if the gland is still blocked or what's going on. Hope that helps you a little and you don't have Blepharitis although they tell me the condition isn't really serious, just chronic and painful (does everything have to be chronic and painful!)

3x times a day is the reccomendation over here... Morning, late-afternoon, and last thing at night Vivian..
I think a chalazion is the same thing, just a nicer sounding word than 'sty'-lol..
But i stand to be corrected on that one..
Could be the beginning of a Chalzion?. This is the problem with Dry-eye, the amount of wrong diagnosis is frightning! so whatever a specialist tells you, obviously go with it, cos they are the professionals, but dont accept it 100%, 90% trust is more realistic. As for a diagnosis over the phone!!?? Crikey they must be good!.

Maybe this is why the Opthamolagists tell us next to nothing info? so we dont end up persuing something it aint? or come back ranting at them when it turns out to be something else. I once read on here, "with dry-eye, you are both the patient and the doctor" also this one- "you must be, a patient patient"..
In my experience which lasted 12 months (introductory period to dry eye) i went through many 'phases' and not knowing what the fudge was going on!.
I started with, is it called K.P.R? where it felt like someone has thrown a handfull of sugar into my eyes, not one ebrasion! 100's all at once.. That subsided, then moved onto what felt like a pice of grit rolling about which was really bad, and on it went, till it all settled, and now with me managing my eyes (mental side is almost back to normal) Normal-me!-lol.. I reckon i'm now catogary Mild/moderate dry eye in right side only, very rare Left eye trouble, and i dont use drops now, or anything! simply close my eye/eyes till pressure feeling subsides..
What i'm trying to say Vivian, is you may be going through the whole spectrum? and yours has not settled yet? once you work out what is bad for you? then actually AVOID IT!! like moving from Texas OR perhaps your employment? then it may all settle to one groundhog day after another instead of some sort of bizzare lottery when you wake up. 'One size does definately not fit all' with dry-eye..

Glad to hear it. I hope it stays away! Might not be a bad idea to continue to do the hot compresses in anticipation of it returning, just to keep it off for as long as possible, and if/when it does reappear, it won't last for very long this way.
