  • A vacation from dry eye pain!

So I haven't been on DEZ for a week (which is actually a long time for me ) because I actually went on vacation despite the horrific dry eyes, which usually keeps me from doing a lot of normal things. Spending money to go somewhere while suffering from dry eyes was incomprehensible to me. But I thought its been too long since I've gone anywhere, the deals are too good, so the heck with it, I went on a 7 day Mexican Riveria cruise. I was SO anxious beforehand...the thought of being stranded on a ship with eye pain and the A/C full blast, the sea breeze blowing in my eyes, and not being able to reach my doc, etc etc.

Surprisingly, my eyes felt about 70% better on average during my vacation! The first day was rough, the whole ship has the A/C on full blast, but as we went further down into Mexico, the humidity and heat increased dramatically. I was in 90+ degrees and 90+% humidity at port! The heat must have kept my MGs open and the extreme humidity nourished my eyes like an invisible moisture chamber to the point that I felt better than I have felt for the past two years! My light sensitivity even got better and the menthol sensation went down, the burning was almost gone. I even forgot about my eyes during moments at port...of course the beautiful sights helped. Because of the nourishment of my eyes at port, it was much easier for me to withstand the A/C back on the ship....in fact I haven't felt that comfortable in A/C in two years. I brought my hydrometer with me and found that in my stateroom, with the A/C on full blast nonstop, the humidity was still 60-70%. It was amazing. There was one area I couldn't handle though: the casino, I still couldn't stand the smoke.

Now that I'm back home, all my symptoms are back I'm thinking of moving to Mexico or Florida...haha. For you long term DE sufferers, I encourage you to go vacation in Mexico or any where tropical...it might actually give you a vacation from the dry eye pain, and that's something we all need.

Whoa, Odydnas, way to go. Over the years, I've seen people post on DEZ about going on vacation and having a wonderful time. Often they forget about their eyes at least somewhat. Also, the atmosphere in warmer, wetter climates often help. Believe it or not, the last trip I took to Las Vegas was my best trip ever since having dry eyes! Now Vegas is hot and DRY, but I took good care of my eyes and was able to enjoy my trip.

I've made several trips there and not all were great, though. I'm so glad you had fun. Lucy

Glad to hear you had a great vacation! You have got to keep living your life in spite of this dry eye, we all do, and I never give up vacation. We just got back from a vacation ourselves. A good vacation is good for the soul and the DES. Also, the planning of the vacation and working towards something always helps me.

            Hi Odydnas,

That is great that you had such a fantastic time! I live in Florida and have dry eye and blepharitis, etc., so I often wonder how much more I would suffer if I moved somewhere less humid. I guess I should appreciate living here although my eyes are certainly a constant bummer. Hmmmm, maybe I need to plan a vacation!

I have lived in 3 states since this happened. This all started in Ca. Now I guess it was a fluke but I had never had eye issues until I moved to CA. Since then I have been to 11 eye specialists and every other type of doctor from allergist to neuroligist and in between. I know the winter in MI was the worst for me and caused the most pain.I'm in FL now and have pain but also more better days and my drop usage is really down. I have dry eye and bleph too. Anyhow I am glad you went on vacation. I have another condition too that limits my ability and in therapy for the pain you learn how to push through the barriers and do the most you can on good days and the best you can on the bad. I think things like this or even smaller events like going to the movie can make the bad days easier to deal with when one gets enjoyment at times.

Yes, Gina, winter in Mich is a b. for dry eyes! Car heaters, furnaces, Ugh. Can hardly wait for winter to get here. This last winter lasted 9 months--lol.

I figured I was seeing an improvement in my eye condition over this past summer, now I'm just wondering if it was all due to the weather? hopefully it does'nt go back to the way it was come the cold weather, regularly gets down to -40degreesC where I am in the winter.

I will wish you all an easy winter weather wise. I am in FL now full year because of another condition that causes my pain to be worse so I do feel that weather does have a huge connection. Hopefully though you guys are repairing and then you are not going to be as sensitive.

I too am worried about this Michigan winter.

This was my first summer with dry eye, and I did much better than the winter. Praying I am improving; although, things seem to be dryer again lately. One day at a time.....

                      Best wishes to all,
                      Melissa

It's about time for the Michiganders to crank out our humidifiers, buy new filters and solution. Hate the thought, but if done now supplies will be plenty. I always try to buy stuff after it's all gone. Lucy
