OK, went for follow up appointment. Initially saw someone else instead, but after some tests I saw ophth:

    - I reacted to either the flourescin or the anesthetic drops (be helpful if I can find out which)
    - First schirmers test. No anesthetic. 10 in right, 9.5 in left.

    - Tear film initially stable, but after anesthetic, left eye in particular very unstable
    - temp plugs mentioned. I expressed wasn't sure whether this was a good idea due to potential inflamation problems making things worse. To consider.
    - I have normal sized puncta
    - No blockage or capping of MGs

    Then saw Mr S:

    - mebium still excessive
    - No ingrowing eyelashes seen (not confident that there are no small hairs though)
    - referred to anterior specialist (he's retinal)
    - He mentioned a tear film specialist in Oxford? John somebody (need to find this out)

interesting to hear of your experience...
I've often wondered about which of the above was the worse, or if was both.

I now suspect the anesthetic is more of an irritant than fluorescein. A few weeks ago I went into meltdown about recurrence of shingles in my eye and got my very understanding optometrist to examine my eye using unpreserved fluorescein in my own unpreserved saline solution drop, and washing it all out thoroughly as soon as he finished, and I had to adverse effect.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that even opthalmologists admit that anaesthetic can irritate the eyes for days afterwards.

It would help if you were to wash it out right away, though, I think.

keep on going....and happy holiday season

I've had anesthetic hurt my eyes so much that I told the doctor to not use it. I realize for some certain things he'd need to use it, but I had many plugs put in without anesthetic. I was burned badly once by anesthetic and it took several days to recover. Lucy
