  • dealing with MGD holistically

My optho put me on minocycline and told me to take it for 3 months to clear up my meibomitis. After 2 weeks of being on it, I broke out in hives really bad. I didn't like the idea of taking anti biotics for that long in the first place because I like to deal with things holistically. My optho told me to stop taking mino and gave me blephamide which really doesn't work for me. He explained that it is actually possible to get rid of meibomitis by doing warm compresses and lid scrubs. If that is true, why are so many people on anti biotics for MGD? I have a pretty severe case and I have been doing the lid scrubs and compresses for about 2 months now and I still don't see a change. I am hesitant about trying Doxy because the allergic reaction to the Mino was pretty bad. I have also heard very bad things about the health risks.

    So, my questions are:
Because I am allergic to Mino, does that mean I will be allergic to Doxy?

Has anyone actually cleared up meibomitis without the use of anti biotics?

If yes, how long did it take you?

Are there any other holistic ways of treating MGD besides lid scrubs, compresses, lubricant, and Flaxseed oil? I have been doing all of the above for so long and still no changes. In fact, I think it's gotten worse.

Thank you very much for any input!

Oh geez, I'm sorry one more

Can MGD actually cause serious vision problems if it is not cured? I have been battling it but sometime I worry it will effect my vision in the future if I don't get rid of it soon.

I have MGD and it blows. My doctor put me on Restasis first before taking doxy. He said most patients get better with restasis so their is no need more doxy.

See the plan is I take restasis for 2 month to bring down inflammation then just do the hot compresses and lid scrubs like everyone esle does.

Maybe your oil glands are inflamed like mine and you need to bring down the inflammation for you hot compresses to be effective ya know.

Also have you try lid massages. Thats what I'm trying to focus on more. I'm trying learn good techniques in that because its appose to be good for people with MGD.

best of luck though. I know MGD is a pain in the butt. But don't worry your not alone okay. and when you can get it all better again you will be able to maintain your eye problem and it will start to feel better.

Sorry to hear about your mino reaction.

Several possible reasons. Sometimes the severity of the condition warrants trying to give it a "jump start" with an antibiotic before moving into 'maintenance' mode with compresses etc. I suspect sometimes the doctor relies on antibiotics because patients are more likely to be compliant with taking a drug than with doing something with more of a hassle factor. Also, many doctors are not aware that there are commercially available warm compresses (like ours) and they (understandably) doubt the efficacy of warm washcloths. Many patients take a course of antibiotic periodically when they get a flare-up and use compresses and hygiene in between.

It may take a great deal of patience. Don't be discouraged if you do not see improvement in that timeframe. It can take considerably longer. And you can go through a 'worse before better' stage. However, you may also want to review your methods. What's your heat source? What (if any) cleanser are you using on your lids? Are you overdoing it, or underdoing it?

Has anyone actually cleared up meibomitis without the use of anti biotics?
Not to discourage you, but keep in mind that MGD can be chronic, in which case it's not a matter of "clearing it up" but getting out of the acute stage into the manageable stage, and then maintaining it. I have MGD and I have never taken an antibiotic for it. I control mine with my rice baggy and lid care.

Thank you so much for all this helpful information! I didn't realize MGD can be chronic. I am really going to focus on the lid scrubs, warm compresses, and lubricating gel. I am set on dealing with this without putting harsh chemicals in my body. Most people say I am overreacting and they don't even notice but they don't realize how annoying and painful it can be. Having my eyes blur in the middle of class because I have some mucus floating around is not so fun. It causes my eyes to have big red veins in them. Had anyone had this problem too?

Can someone tell me what actually causes meibomitis? I did my research and most things I read said rosacea and blepharitis are the main causes. I do not have either one of those things so that leaves me wondering what caused this in the first place? Maybe I can try to prevent it from getting worse if there is something I am doing wrong.

Sorry for all the questions, I'm just trying to get the bottom of things. Thanks!
