Nutrasea HP by Ascenta. It has 2300mg in 4 capsules. I saw a registered dietician and she said that fish oil is much more effective than flax oil. She prefers this brand.

/cough!... sputter...
Well, I just picked up some Ascenta fish oil tonight... WOW... $57.99 for 120 capsules or 200ml of liquid. I'm still recovering from the sticker shock lol
Anyhow, 1 serving (4 capsules or 1 tsp of the liquid) contains 1500mg EPA, 500mg DHA and 300mg of "other omega-3's"
My old fish oil capsules would give me 1200mg total of omega-3's per 4 capsules.
Sooooo, I have a feeling this will not make a difference to my psycho dry eyes, but I'm going to try it anyways!

TBA: Best value in Fish oil!
SAAG,
I'm working on a spreadsheet that may help you! I'm trying to determine the "Best Value" for fish oil supplements. I'm determining the value based on total grams of DHA+EPA/dollar.
Unfortunately, Ascenta is coming in last place with 1.034g of DHA+EPA/dollar (2000 mg X 30 servings per bottle / $58). First place is currently RxOmega 3 Factors 400 + 200 at 4.8g of DHA + EPA/dollar.
I'll post the spreadsheet when I'm done. I need to go to the store and get some prices for some of the brands.
I'm not including ALA or "other" omega 3s - only DHA and EPA. I'm also not distinguishing b/w TG form and EE form.

Too bad Ascenta is one of the pricier ones... oh well... it's not the end of the world! It looks like it's a high quality product...I'm going to start it tomorrow AM... hopefully I won't get any of those nasty fish burps... ick...
Who knows... maybe it will cure me... you know... right after pigs start flying
Even if it doesn't help my eyes, it's good for cholesterol levels... not that I have an issue with that, but maybe the fish oil will keep it that way (high cholesterol runs in my family)Last edited by SAAG; 03-Feb-2010, 22:57.

SAAG,
You are absolutely right...cost isn't exactly the only variable that determines if we like a supplement or not. I'm sure that the more concentrated ones that can deliver the maximum amount of DHA/EPA with the least amount of fish oil per pill would have the fewest fish oil burbs and related side effects. (I am thinking about adding a column to reflect this measure). This may be worth an additional cost! Also, I know some people firmly believe TG form is the way to go and others that firmly believe EE form is the way to go. Ascentia seems to be one of the few supplements available in the TG form and I'm sure this contributes to the high cost as well. If I was a mathematician I would write an algorithm that takes into account all these variables. However, I am not that smart!!!
Kate and Chemia,
I would be happy to add your supplements to my spreadsheet.
Anyone else have a supplement they use and want to see it included on the cost comparison list???

Well, I was clearly having a moment of insanity when I purchased my Ascenta fish oil, because I bought the liquid form, rather than the capsules. What was I thinking?!?!?!
However, the salesguy said that he takes that one and he swore that I wouldn't taste even a hint of fish... soooo.... this morning, I mustered up the courage to take my 1 teaspoon dose.
To my complete and utter SHOCK, there really was absolutely ZERO fish taste. It tasted like oily lemon juice with a hint of rosemary OMG!!! I am seriously amazed! I despise fishy-tasting stuff, so I as you can imagine, if there was even the slightest hint of fishiness, I would have gagged lol
So, it's still kind of gross, because who in their right mind would want to gulp down oily lemon juice, right? But, since it's only a measly teaspoon (for 2300mg of omega 3's!), it's really not too bad... I'm thinking I may try stirring it into some orange juice next... (err... must buy some first though!)

Hi
I am in the uk. I now use Nordic Naturals as their products are triglyceride based and not ethyl ester as most are. This allows your body to actually make use of them(supposedly) so although they are pricey they are going to give you the best shot in the long run. I am now looking into an anti imflammatory diet to help with the absorbtion of omega 3s. You have to do a bit of homeworlk but as diet plays a crucial role in inflamation i have now got to make some serious life style changes and hope.
hope you get on okay

If you sign up for their monthly shipments and give a magic 10% doctor code, you get 120 gelcaps for $36.90 with free shipping. You can save even more if you opt for 3 bottles quarterly.
(1120 mg x 60 servings per bottle) / $36.90 = 1.821 of DHA+EPA/dollar
You might also want to put the ratio of EPA to DHA in your spreadsheet. The PRN has a ratio of 3 to 1.

spreadsheet to determine fish oil "Best Value"
Jebe,
Yes, thank-you for the suggestion! Ironically, that one was first on my list! Most of my prices are the retail price. You can take the spreadsheet and modify it for your own use. Change prices, serving sizes, add products, remove products etc. I added a column for percent EPA+DHA of total oil. This number is indicative of the concentration. i.e....the higher the % the more concentrated it is. Per your suggestion, I added an EPA/DHA ratio column as well! Good idea! There is also a column to indicate if the product is from "natural" triglycerides.
The only problem is the website won't let me attach the file! I keep getting an error. I'm not sure what the problem is....here's everything I have tried so far.
1) made sure it was 2003 version (.xls, not .xlsx)
2) made sure it was small enough (it's quite small...only 25 kb or so)
3) simplified the file name (took out spaces)
4) saved it as a .txt file and tried uploading it that way.
5) switched browsers from Opera to Mozilla Firefox
I still can't get it to upload!!!!! Any suggestions? The spreadsheet is ready to go!

Guys: There seems to be a consensus among the dozen or so doctors I've polled that two of the more reliable fish/flax oil manufacturers are Barleans and Carlsons. I'm currently using Barleans omega swirls - just 'cause they're fun - and I keep a bottle of Carlsons cod liver oil pills around for travel.
Also, to Sheila - fantastic list. I've prob tried 75-85% of the things you list, and what becomes hard to figure out is what's helping and what isn't after a point. But that should be very useful to people here.

Good news! Rebecca said the file upload issue is a minor snafu with the website and she is working on a repair. I will upload the spreadsheet as soon as the repair is ready. Thanks for being patient!

Please let me know if you are able to download/access it! Thanks!
