  • Doxy making my eyes a mess

I am currently a few weeks away from seeing a new ophthalmologist. I was diagnosed with blepharitis from a specialist who specializes in eye disorders. He never specified what kind it was and I never asked. My old ophthalmologist also said this just that i have bleph, nothing about mgd.

I think it was dermatitis kind, since they only told me to do lid scrub and prescribed antibiotic ointment to scrub my lashes with.

Anyway while I was waiting to see an ophthalmologist my family doctor suggested i try doxy for 3 months. I was up for it, i figured it wouldnt hurt.

I did one run for a month at 100mg after 3 weeks i noticed after taking it my eyes became inflamed. I also have slight mucus discharge occasionally which I read is from the oil layer and mucus layer of our tears touching due to low production of water.

I stopped taking it, and my eyes did not get better but they stopped being as terrible as on the doxy. I decided to give it one more go and started again, 2 weeks my eyes felt good, and now every time i take it the same issue.

Has anyone experienced this, my doctor wants me to stick with it, as he claims like many others it takes about 3 months for results. But it keeps making my eyes inflamed and gooey (only word i can think to describe it), with unusual amounts of mucus discharge.

I am just curious if others noticed this, and seen improvement? Or is it simply not right for me.

My opth. wants me to quit the doxy for the summer as it can do some major damage if you get too much sun. I'm worried that my eyes are going to get much worse when I'm off of it, I think its been one of the only things that has really helped with my dry eye problems.

If you have to, you could still take it in the summer... you'd just have to make sure to always wear a good sunscreen... make sure there is good UVA protection in there... not just UVB... Ombrelle makes a really good sunscreen.

So don't worry too much if you end up having to take it all summer... of course there are no guarantees, but odds are, if you take precautions when in the sun, you'll be just fine!

(I'm still on my tetracycline... like you, I'm scared to stop it and have things worsen!... I'm outside everyday too - I just slather on the sunscreen!)

Maybe your doc will allow you to have enough refills for the summer just in case... that way, if you notice any worsening of your eyes when you try to stop it, you can put yourself back on it ASAP without having to wait for an appointment.

          allergy to doxy?

eyeproblems, my eyes reacted similarly to doxy. But, in my case I also had itching on my body and some other symptoms of allergy. So, apparently, I have an allergy to it.

Not saying you have an allergy to it, but my eyes did get terrible just like yours. Mucus, inflammation, all that.

Doxycycline can make skin very sensitive to the sun - thus increasing the chance of getting sunburn.

Yes I get sunburned much easier on doxy or tetracycline. However, if you apply a good sunscreen (spf 30 or higher) this usually solves that problem.

With sunscreen I can spend 4+ hours in the sun golfing or whatever and feel fine. The weird thing is that my face is really the only thing with increased sensitivity, the rest of my body does not get burned easily.

Can you use Doxy EYE drops instead???? I would never take doxy orally again. I think it is much better to have it compounded in drops that way you don't deplete your good intestinal flora. That can bring a bunch of new problems, specially to women....

My dr in Houston used to prescribe me that and it helped a lot. It was compounded at a pharmacy in CA. Leiters or Lieters...is the name...

I don't know about Doxy in `drop' form but regarding concerns about compromising good bacteria - I take Acidophilus to counter this.

I have just been away in France caravaning for a month and we had a heat wave (for us Brits) temps of 33 C - over 90 F I was on doxy but had reduced it down to 25mgs.We practically lived outdoors but i never stayed in direct sun, and always went into shade when i could.I used a floral umbrella as a parasol when walking in it and we did a lot of sight seeing.I did get some strange looks sporting an umbrella in hot sun !!(The victorians were not so stupid when their womenfolk used parasols- Its a lot cooler than a floppy hat and gives better protection)
At first i used factor 50 but after a few days i stopped using any sun screen.I have returned home with a terrific tan and no side effects of Doxy
The doxy suits me very well and at the present dose of 25mgs for 6 weeks now i am symptom free and have not had to use drops for weeks
I always take acidophalus when on doxy
I am going to try to stop it soon --- My understanding is that it continues to work for several weeks/months even after you stop it I hope so
