  • Severe Dry Eye: Confusion around using Tacrolimus 0.03% Ointment W/W

I am putting this thread because I am with some really very difficult situation, I want your suggestion.

I already have no vision in my Left Eye and also have severe dryness in both the Eyes, Schirmer's test result is 2 mm for both the Eyes. Ophthalmologist here in Bangalore has prescribed me Tecrolimus 0.03% w/w Ointment for 90 days (one time daily) inside my Right Eye which is having vision.

I am not sure how I have been advised this ointment as It's an skin ointment, the manual with the ointment say it's not for ophthalmic use. I am afraid and haven't used it yet because I have only one eye with Vision. I have also read a lot in Internet that Tacrolimus is used in organ transplants as a immunosuppressant and also suspected for cancer and it's also used in skin for treating Eczema.

Please see the attached Test report and the medicine prescribed for both the eyes and let me know your suggestion, I don't want to take any risk with my Right Eye so should I use this Tecrolimus ointment or not as per my condition of having vision in only one eye ? Help would be highly appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Hello, I use this drug. I've been on it for a year with no complications. There were some early animal studies suggesting increased lymphomas but the evidence is not conclusive. Many excema patients use it daily, as do some uveitis sufferers. I simply smear a tiny amount on my eyelids every night before bed and it has truly cured me.

Check my posting history for more info, I wrote a very long post about my experiences with this drug.
