  • Is this dry eye?

So for about the past 5 or so years, I have been having trouble each and every single day with my eyes. For all these years I just thought it was normal for your eyes to water and become slightly red and irritated when you walk outside or into another room. Here are most of my symptoms that I can think of right now....

    - My eyes just feel generally uncomfortable/gritty for most of the day.
    - I have red veins in my eyes, and sometimes new ones may appear and disappear again. My eyes usually just have this red glaze to them constantly.
    - My eyes start to burn and become really irritated at random times but on a consistent daily basis, sometimes they can feel fine for periods of time throughout the day.
    - The more I sleep, the worse my eyes seem to get. For instance if I sleep 10 hours, then I will wake up with bloodshot eyes, however if I sleep 5 hours, I will wake up and my eyes will just be red.
    - I have shocking dark circles under my eyes, and I mean they are really bad. I have always thought that these have something to do with whatever is irritating my eyes constantly.
    - All eye drops I have tried really have no effect
    - The corners of my eyes can also become really red
-Occasionally feels like there is a piece of grit in my eye

There are probably more symptoms which I have left out, but the only thing I can say for sure is that usually when I am in a warmer environment (eg. in a room with the heating on) then my eyes feel quite good. I am currently seeing an optometrist and he is not sure what is wrong with me, however he did say that it only seems like the bottom part of my eye is irritated (inside the lower eyelid) whilst the top part of my eye is completely fine and is not being irritated at all.

Also I have tried most dry eye treatments, and they seem to have minimal effect. I have been tested for common allergies, and nothing also. The optometrist I am currently seeing says it does not look like dry eye, because only the bottom part of my eye is being affected. When I pull down my lower eyelids it is really red inside them. But I don't know what this could be. The optometrist also stated he does not think its blepharitis, and the treatments I tired had minimal effect.

So I am not sure, what the heck is wrong with my eyes?

Most of these things are dry eye symptoms but you need a detailed exam to pinpoint it further. "Dry eye" is a catchall term for a lot of conditions that cause these symptoms. You may want to read this article before a doctor appointment - hopefully with a specialist - to help with asking more specific questions.

Also another thing, the doctors say I have a deviated septum which is actually pretty bad.

Could a deviated septum cause trouble with your eyes? This is basically one of my last hopes, that the deviated septum is causing these dark circles and irritated eyes. Is this possible at all?

So what are the chances of a deviated septum being the cause to my eye troubles? Because right now its the only thing I can think of as to what is causing this.

I have also taken notice to the times when my eyes do feel good, and this is what I found.

When I am in a warmer environment (eg. a heated room) then my eyes nearly instantly feel much more comfortable. Does this give any clue as to what the problem with my eyes could be?

These questions may best be answered by a specialist, after a thorough examination. We can only make guesses from your descriptions.
