I thought I would post my story of consultations with Doctors and Optometrists over the years. 8 consultations with 2 Physicians, 1 Ophthalmologist, 3 Optometrists and 1 Student. The Student knew more than the previous 3 Doctors.
Here it is:
1-Dr #1 (GP), November 2005
Diagnosis – Uncertain, possible infection
Treatment – antiseptic ointment
2-Dr #2 (GP) February 2006
Diagnosis – Uncertain, possible pupil dilation problem
Treatment – Lacrilube and referral
3-Ophthalmologist #1, May 2006
Diagnosis – "Just" Dry eye
Treatment – Hypromellose and Lacrilube at night.
4-Optometrist's student placement, Sept 2006
Diagnosis – Large dry area on cornea (normally this would be seen as many small dry dots)
Treatment – Stop propranolol (beta-blocker), take care of environment and blink often when using PC
5-Optometrist #1, Feb 2007
Diagnosis – Evaporative dry eye
Treatment – Drops and Theralife supplement
6-Optometrist #2 (with DES interest), May 2007
Diagnosis – Uncertain, possible lacrimal gland blockage
Treatment – Smartplug (requested by myself)
7-Optometrist #1, August 2007
Diagnosis – Evaporative (Smartplug did not work)
Treatment – N/A
8-Optometrist #3 (with DES interest and doctorate), May 2008
Diagnosis – Uncertain. Aqueous tears sufficient. Probable MGD/Blepharitis (meibum sufficient but flawed)
Treatment – Heat compress
I would like to hear other's experiences. Incidentally, all these professionals were sympathetic to my condition except the Ophthalmologist. In her defence I was only 6 months in, had been referred to her on a fake pupil dilation problem and had never heard of dry eye at that time.
Regards,
Bruce
