Dr. Jay Johnston in Oklahoma City is an excellent doctor who specializes in tear duct blockage problems.
He found a blockage in my left tear duct in 2009 and removed it in his office. My left eye has been good as far as tearing ever since then (I still suffer from MGD).
This week I went back to him because my right eye had been watering excessively. He removed some excess tissue that was blocking my punctum and also found a blockage in the tear duct. Today (two days later) the tears have pretty much stopped going down my face.
In addition to being extremely knowledgeable about tearing problems, Dr. Johnston and his nurse are very caring, compassionate people. I have seen MANY ophthalmologists, and he is the only one who knows how to take care of the constant tearing problem. I would highly recommend him.
I am also seeing Dr. Tauber in Kansas City for my MGD. I live 5 1/2 hours from him, but haven't had any luck finding a doctor where I live who has been able to help me with my MGD. I tried Lipiflow here in OKC, and it didn't help. The doctor here (Dean McGee Eye Institute in OKC) pretty much dismissed me after I told him the Lipiflow didn't help. He admitted he didn't know what else to do for me.
Dr. Tauber increased my Doxycycline to 200 mg./day and emphasized that I need to do the warm compresses and lid massage 2x a day WITHOUT FAIL to get the oils thinner. He recommended I use a "good" quality fish oil, and I switched to Nordic Natural Omega 3. When I go back to see him in September, he may do a probe of the glands. Since I live so far away, I was a little disappointed that he didn't go ahead and do the probe the first time I saw him, but he told me he doesn't "work fast". He wanted to give the oils a chance to get thinner before considering the probe. I do appreciate his conservative approach and not proceeding with the probe when he did not think it was in my best interest to do so on the first visit.
After I see Dr. Tauber again I will do a separate post about him. But I was very impressed after my first visit with him. He is the only doctor I have seen that has a plan for my MGD over and above the standard recommendations from other eye doctors.
