Thank you everyone for the responses... This is getting very interesting. I'm going to make it a sticky so we can continue collecting everyone's input. Keep 'em coming!

The sensation depends on the event.

So, using the pain scale of 1-10 with 10 being severe I've broken it into Event... Sensation... Pain level.
Take from it what you like.

              RCE erosion = rip = 10

48 hour Post erosion blinking = stabbing pain = 9

              48 hour post erosion = just pain = 8

Light sensitivity = stabbing (at front of eyes) + throbbing (at back of eyes + temple) = 4

              Background discomfort = gritty / scraping = 1

On application of lubricants = burning sensation (exactly the same as chills being rubbed in eyes) = 1

Child with MGD: photophobia, tearing, no energy. In children there can be no other sensation, therefore often undiagnosed resulting in severe vascularisation, corneal melt; still no pain as adults describe.

For me it is the photophobia first. Secondary would be the burning.

If you have multiple symptoms, try to articulate the pain sensation that seems to be the most debilitating, that most interferes with your usual activities.

Examples (but please add different ones if none of these fits you!)

                          burning
                          foreign body sensation
                          scratchy
                          gritty
                          sore
                          pressure
                          photophobia
                          menthol sensation
                          Eyes get soreness.

I'm going to go with soreness/tightness.

And I would LOVE to hear what people's causes of dry eye are in this thread as well, if they are known. I don't think people always list LASIK or a similar surgery as the cause in their profiles. Probably for good reason. I don't want to admit it either.

                              Ho hum.
