  • sudden, severe dry eye and getting worse. age 21/female

    Hi,

I'm just new to dryeyezone and wasn't sure which forum to post on. I'm just looking for anyone with a similar experience to me and anyone who can offer some comfort of advice, please, I'm really scared.

I've been to an optician and an eye clinic who've both told me that i've got really really dry eyes, they've given me several types of eye drops but they don't help and my eyes are getting worse by the day. I've also tried warm compresses and eye massage. they give some relief, but only for 5 or 10 minutes! This condition has seemed to appear overnight, about 2 weeks ago, and its getting to the point where its stopping me doing my job properly and going out to see friends. I just feel the need to keep my eyes scrunched tightly closed all the time. I work in a bar and the other day i had to serve customers with a hand over one eye, alternating, cos i just couldn't bear to keep them open. I've had to leave gatherings with friends as I've been in so much discomfort that it wasn't worth staying, I cant't look at people or interact properly. It is not constant, often I wake up feeling ok, but after a few hours it will begin and not go away until i sleep again.

The only connections that I can make are:

a, I have been taking 150g of lamotragine daily for months and dry eye started around about when i raised it to 200g. But dry eye is not one of the side effects and it seems odd that just a 50g difference would bring it on.

b, I used to swim regularly, but i had an operation and had to stop for 6 weeks. The dry eye started also about when i swam again. But I've stopped swimming and its still here. I thought perhaps I could've picked up and infection from the pool, but the optician says there is no sign, has anyone experienced an undetected infection?

3, I have read online that it may have some connection to Interstitial Cystitis. I do not have this but I have had sexual cystitis. But it began months before this and I've not had it for a few weeks weeks so it doesn't coincide.

Sorry, huge long post! i hope this is the correct forum! perhaps I should cut each question down into smaller posts? not sure, I'm new to this.

One last thing, i'e heard that dry eye is really uncommon for my age group? and is it normal to have an overnight start like this, or is it gradual?

Thankyou so much for taking the time to read, and for any help!!

    Hi katybean,

It could be many things, but the Lamictal [Lamotragine] is a good place to start. In fact, dry eyes is a side effect of most anti-seizure medications.

Here are some side effects listed for Lamictal:
    http://www.drugs.com/sfx/lamictal-side-effects.html

Dermatological:Infrequent: Acne, alopecia, hirsutism, maculopapular rash, skin discoloration, and urticaria. Rare: Angioedema, erythema, exfoliative dermatitis, fungal dermatitis, herpes zoster, leukoderma, multiforme erythema, petechial rash, pustular rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and vesiculobullous rash.

Special Senses:Frequent: Amblyopia. Infrequent: Abnormality of accommodation, conjunctivitis, dry eyes, ear pain, photophobia, taste perversion, and tinnitus. Rare: Deafness, lacrimation disorder, oscillopsia, parosmia, ptosis, strabismus, taste loss, uveitis, and visual field defect.
Urogenital System:Infrequent: Abnormal ejaculation, hematuria, impotence, menorrhagia, polyuria, and urinary incontinence. Rare: Acute kidney failure, anorgasmia, breast abscess, breast neoplasm, creatinine increase, cystitis, dysuria, epididymitis, female lactation, kidney failure, kidney pain, nocturia, urinary retention, and urinary urgency.
I've highlighted possible connections to your symptoms. I think you probably need to see the doctor who is prescribing the Lamotragine. The addition of another 50mg could be the trigger to your symptoms.

A much more serious side effect, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, can be triggered by use of any anti-seizure medications. It involves the skin (rash) and also the eyes (inflammation) and always needs to be ruled out and monitored closely when you increase doses. Please discuss this with your doctor, too. It is rare, but is very serious if it does occur.

I would also recommend ruling out an infection, other autoimmune issues, etc.

Please see your doctor and get all these questions answered and the more serious possibilities ruled out.

Check back in and let us know how it goes.

Hi Scout thankyou so much for your reply!

I have been to doctors but she was quite unhelpful n said that she didnt believe it was dry eye cos 'its just not seen in my age group' but i went to a walk-in eye clinic n they said i have really bad dry eye... I told them about lamotragine but they seemed to think it couldnt be connected; but i am going to reduce my dose anyway. Praying that it is just that or i dont know what i'll do! yeah Steven johnson is scary! i have no other symtoms of it though. going back to doctors asap to try and be referred to a specialist (opthologist?) gonna try fish oil aswell as i've heard that can help. and one woman who i found online suggested probiotic drinks like actimel.. sceptical of this but will try anything!

Thankyou again for taking the time to search for me and reply, i'll let you know how things go I hope you're ok!

I reduced my lamotragine from 200 back to 150 and my eyes got all better such a relief! But only for about a week, and now the problem is coming back :/ although not nearly as badly as before. Very confused cos I've been on 150 for months with no problems. I'm going to go back to the doctor and see what she says. I wonder if its possible to develop a side-effect to a medication randomly after months of using it? very weird!
