  • New - dry eye and blepharospasm

    Hi,

I had lasik surgery 6 years ago and it was the best 6 years of my life. However it all came to a screetching halt a year ago. My eyes kept closing while I was driving. Not sure why. When they continued day after day, I went to my eye doctor. He said I had an eyelid problem and sent me to a lid specialist. Lid specialist said, no, I have dry eye and put plugs in then sent me to a cornial specialist. (doctor #3), she said, eye looks great. Sent me back to #2. I got fed up because the plugs did not work, so I spiraled down into a panic attack and took a week off of work feeling out of control. When I asked doc #2 for a doctors note for work. He wrote "blepharospasm" on it. I looked it up. the internet is a double edge sword. I thought, oh that is me. so I saw doct. #4. He saw my eyes close and said, no you dont have dry eye, you have blepharospasm and started botox treatment right away. I saw 2 neurologist to make sure I did not have other "nerve" diseases. (doctors # 5 and 6). (by the way, I am ususally a very healthy runner and never had any problems in my life). So, I had 2 rounds of botox treatments that helped my eye lids from closing and this took 6 months. When it was time for round 3 of botox - I changed doctors so I could have one closer to home. (doctor #7 and current doctor). This doctor said, "no, you dont have blepharospasm, you have severe dry eye probably from lasik." uggggh, so today I have not had botox shots and I am 2 months into restasis and I have great days about 3 at a time, then really bad days usually 2 at a time. I refuse to be down about all this junk that I was handed a year ago and pray each day for God to heal me or at least give me strength to carry on.

Does anyone else have eye closure due to severe dry eye?

I don't but my sister-in-law does and she is a mess thanks to the botox treatments. As I recall the story she had 2 treatments. After the first treatment her eye was completely paralyzed and wouldn't close at all. That made her situation MUCH worse. The problem had never completely resolved when they gave her a 2nd round that compounded it. She refused the 3rd treatment but now her eyes are so bad that she can no longer read, watch TV, drive (even long drives are challenging for her) and is limited to a couple of hours of activity in the morning before she has to basically sit around with her eyes closed waiting for bedtime which is about 7:00PM so that she can put some gel in them and close them for some relief. They still don't close properly and I doubt that they ever will.

The botox specialist has informed her that if she won't follow his treatment plan then he can't help her and refuses to see her if she won't 'co-operate' The other Drs tell her there is nothing wrong with her eyes and that she needs to see the botox Dr. She has basically pretty much given up and just suffers - A LOT. She wears moisture chamber glasses and has had one puncta plugged which helped some but her eyes are still a mess.

You were very fortunate that the botox didn't make you worse but I know that I would never let anyone touch near my eyes with botox.

      Hi Farmgirl,

Tell your sister in law not to give up. I have felt like her before. My latest doctor has informed me that we needed to treat dry eye first. That sometimes dry eye can mask itself as blepharospasm. She should go and get another opinion from another doctor. I have been to 7 and even though I am not as bad as your sister in law, I was there. Sometimes I can just control things myself with my mind. If your mind goes sour and you give up, your body will give up. Please tell her to see another doctor. By the way, botox works for alot of bleph patients, while others do not like it. However, people had to test many different doctors before finding one that hit the correct spots. botox is not for dry eye, its for Blepharospasm, it actually made my eyes even dryer.

I know for a fact that she has blepharospasm as her eyes snapped shut one day when she was driving and she couldn't get them open. She managed to pull over without killing anyone or herself but that has got to be scary. So that begs the question, does she have dry eye because she has blepharospasm or does she have blepharospasm because she has dry eye?

I am sure that botox has helped someone or they wouldn't be doing it but I know for a fact it ruined her life.
