  • New To Dry Eye Syndrome Yippee! Not

    Hi Everyone,

well i am 29 and have been suffering with my eyes for about 2 month's, at first the doctors thought it was infection, then they thought allergy so gave me drops, but that didn't work, then they refered me to an opthamologist and he diagnosed dry eye, i had the schirmer test (i think that's what it is) and i had a score of 7 in one eye and 5 in the other and he also put some illuminous dye in my eyes....i am using VISCOTEARS every hour (im a postman so being outside in the weather not helping) and also LACRI-LUBE which i have to use on a night......to be honest the relief is only slight, i have to say my eyes dont itch as much but they still feel strained and they are burning lots it really is getting to me, i also have a defined crease under each eye, more noticable under one eye than the other, i supposes that's because of dehydration??. I have read a few posts and amongst the younger people that suffer it just comes on so quick, like me, one day i was fine, i woke the next and started having problems with my eyes........is this going to be a life issue or can it be a case of it could just correct itself and the eye will start to lube itself again? its also so great to find a forum with people who are on the same wave length with the same problem.......from the info on the net, they say that its a problem for older people ( 66 plus) and is seen more in women than men....

    take care all

Interesting that you're in the UK and were given lacri lube. I was too along with visco tears. Were you also given that?

It appears that there is a standard procedure in place here where every patient presenting with certain symptoms are treated the same as opposed to a case by case individual basis, which I find unacceptable because each case may require subtle differences in treatment.

      wetting issue

fishingpaul, I would venture that since being outdoors for your work exacerbates symptoms, you may have a problem with the complete wetting and possible rapid de-wetting of your ocular surface. This can happen regardless of whether tear production is low, on the one hand, or lipid and/or mucin secretions are inadequate, on the other.

Many of us here use a product line specifically designed to compensate for wetting problems, and in the UK, one of these products is available as Clinitas Ultra 3. (Other Clinitas products are quite different from Ultra 3.) In other posts over the past week or so, UK members here have discussed where this product is most readily available. (Here in the U.S., the product is called FreshKote, and requires a prescription. In the UK, Clinitas Ultra 3 currently does not require an Rx. I recently confirmed this with Matheson's.)

Usually, Rebecca's Shop (see link above), carries the non-Rx versions of this product line (Dakrina and Dwelle, which do not include the lipid present in Clinitas Ultra 3), but these items are temporarily out of stock. . .In any case, if you surf this site for information on Dwelle, FreshKote, and/or Clinitas Ultra 3, you may find lots of entries comparing them to the products you have been given as starters.

Also, please search the archives and encyclopedia here on ointments, as these are controversial, such that the Lacrilube you're trying may actually be counterproductive.

Regardless of the treatment direction you pursue, you'll find lots and lots of youngsters like you, of both genders, fighting your challenge, here, some very successfully.

You can find out a lot of information on this forum, read to your heart's content! The more you know the better. Of course the more you read about people suffering because of DES, probably the worse you are off (but thats another story). You mentioned being outside a lot at work. Im outside quite a bit too outside of work, and a lot of times couldn't be without my Wiley-x prescription sunglasses. They have a foam gasket around them and function similar to a pair of goggles, stopping most of the wind from getting to my eyes. They aren't perfect, but they are a lifesaver for me. I would take a look at something like that from Wiley-X or Panoptix if you can get those over there.

thanks for the info you guys, it's definately not helping working outside, i am struggling with the sunlight (yes we do get some in the UK ha ha) it really hurts my eyes and seems to make the crease under the eye stand out, i know i should wear shades.....is a defined crease under the eye just one of the symptoms? has anyone else got them? mine seem to be more defined under one eye than the other, can dry eye be worse in one eye than the other?? anyway i will struggle on until i see the specialist again in 2 months time.

          thanks again
