  • Cornea Specialist Verdict & a doxycycline question.

    I went to a cornea specialist yesterday and he perscribed me doxycycline.

    He said that b/c of lasik my tear film is just "out of whack" and that in time it will get better as it heals.

    He told me to keep up with Restasis 1x a day.
    Refreshe Optive every 15 mins.
    Thera Tears every 30 mins.
    Systane Balance 4X a day.
    and Doxycycline 1x a day. (to help with eyelids, he said that should help with redness along with drops and all.)

    My Question is how long (if this were to help at all, I've read that it doesn't do a thing with some people) will I be taking this before I see any sort of change/improvemet?

    For me, I started to see improvements in my meibomian glands within a week of restarting doxycycline. But it could take maybe 3-4 weeks before you feel different... I think it depends on how bad off you are when you start...

      Thanks SAAG,
      Did you have any of the nasty side effects that it says it causes?? The first day I was fine, I drank a whole glass of water with it and did what instructions told me to;
      but today, I have been nauseous all day and have had a head ache (although i think the headache was due from eye over use yesterday).

      I'm hoping it's coincidence and that today was just a bad day in general.

        Vivian,

        It took longer for doxy to have an effect on me (a little over a month) but I can say it's one of the only things that has actually worked. I have to take 100 mgs twice a day to have a lasting effect. I do not have any side effects from it.

          Rose,
          Thanks for your reply! We'll just have to see, I'm taking 50mg once a day.

                I started with 50 mg twice a day...started seeing a difference around 2 weeks...then I go down to one 50 mg a day when I feel pretty good. I stopped for awhile but the stinging started to come back...so I am back on one a day. I dont feel any side effects that I know of. Im thinking of quitting for as long as I can take it. I really havent figured out if it would be bad if I took doxy everyday for the rest of my life??? Some doctors say its not a problem...others think it is and then others dont even know why I would take doxy for dry eyes in the first place! You will find that you will be the best "doc" for you! Dont be afraid of trying something new...have an open mind and be sure to rule out things that dont help you along the way.
