  • Has anyone successfully treated scleral veins --even temporarily??

Has anyone found a successful way to deal with scleral veins that leave the eyes looking bloodshot?

Over the past 3 months, I have noticed a lot more redness due to a few red veins and some tiny pink ones that get more prominent when they are irritated. I went to Dr Latkany, who dx'd occular rosacea and some possible allergies. He wanted to start with artificial tears, Pazeo, cold compress on eyes and looking at triggers i.e. trying a week without makeup. Doxycycline is next but he prefers to prescribe that in October when the sun isn't as bright.

The bloodshot eyes have ruined my life for the past few monthss--no dating, no nothing because I look so odd. I'm basically a hermit. Has anyone found a succesful solution. Even if I only got 50% improvement, that would give me my life back.

I'm so grateful for the way people in this community help each others. It's amazing how much I've learned here.

    Hi Foggy
Sorry, I can not help with your bloodshot issues - hopefully someone will. Or alternative search from the forum. Good luck!
    Maybe without make-up will jhelp??

Thanks for sharing your visit to Dr Latkany. So you have MGD? Did he recommend you
    1) massage
    2) particular lid cleanser

Did he check if you have demodex?
    Thanks!

Hang in there foggyrain, remember, this is a process and you have just started. I hope that you have not become a hermit over bloodshot eyes. I get that it is upsetting but please don't let it define who you are. I am sure that you have many great qualities that set you apart and good friends will accept you for who you are, not what your eyes look like. If someone rejects you as a friend over red veins in your eyes then those people are shallow anyhow and I wouldn't even want them as a friend. Stay the course.....F/G

Hi MGD, he said my eyes are not that dry so massage and lid scrubs will make things worse. He recommended moisturizing drops and some other things.

He definiteily didn't check for Dermodex. Does he do that for anyone? He' isn''t a derm, and even most derms don't do that..

Thanks for the sweet response. No one has rejected me but I don't like to date if I don't look good. Honestly, it really really stands out. And I have always had beautiful eyes.

Farmgirl, are you trying to tell me there is no solution to this? I'm willing to pay or do anything.

            Hi Foggy

Did Dr say WHY lid scrubs will make things worse? That is useful/important to learn.
I personally think lid hygiene is important, especially allergy/MGD - just like cleaning teeth.

Demodex: NO idea if he does that for others but eye doctors can easily detect it.

cold compress: why he recommends you do it, if your eyes are not so dry?

occular rosacea: Seems related to diet - perhaps try to avoid meat and dairy for 2 weeks or do food allergy test,
what I have learnt from this couple, ''Dr. Travis Zigler and Dr. Jenna Zigler, Both Optometrist Answer Your Questions'' 28.08.2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agJJcaDHazw

What tests has he carried out for you?

            Thanks!

I don't have much itching. The problem is the redness, which he thought was caused by inflammation from ocular rosacea. Hence the cold compresses. (I think that warm ones are used for dry eye

He recommended I avoid eye makeup, chocolate etc for 2 weeks. I am doing the eye makeup test now.

You mean dermodex on the skin? Would he do that by scraping?

He recommended an allergist for the allergy tests. I don't think he does those himself.

                Demodex:
We all have them especially on the skin and some hairs (nose, eye lashes etc and they eat our oil) and
when too many, eyes are inflammed. Two types in the eye and only tea tree oil (TTO) can kill them but not easy, their cycle is 21 days. skillful doctors just pull out ''right'' lashes, say 4pcs, and examine if demodex are found.

My new lid hygiene would be: pure HOCI (like Avenova) + add pure TTO into facial cleanser to
avoid bacteria and demodex...not sure if that is TOO MUCH?? But prevention is easier than cure!
                Anyone tries this combination?

MGD, Thanks for letting me know about this. Seems like there is a lot of controversy about dermodex and rosacea i.e. does dermodex actually cause rosacea or is it just a symptom? It is definitely worth a try though

I will probably just try those cliradex pads as it's easier to clean the margins that way than with a cleanser. I will test them first to see if they irritate my eyes. If they work, then the dermodex probably plays a role. Otherwise, no loss except the $40!

                    Hi Foggy
Just wonder if you have inflammation/Rosacea then it normally relates to MGD??
so I am curious if the dr examined/pressed your glands for their function (= clear oil, like baby oil, secrets)?
As this is very basic yet important to identify MGD. Glands could look prefect BUT no function.

For sure I am not telling you there is no solution, my comment is referring to the here and now.

Like I said, you are early on in the process and there are no quick, cut and dried answers. It is a process to find out what works, what doesn't work and why you are having the problem in the first place. It just takes time and there is no other way to describe it. That is why so many of us start off in OMG what is happening mode and over time come to a place where we can tolerate what we have. My eyes are dry, will always be dry and will always need babying but I am so much better off than I was when I started. I have tried dozens of things that didn't work and have found about half a dozen that have worked and those are keeping me comfortable enough that I am not in distress. It has been a process. And by the way my eyes are not always red like they used to be. That comes and goes depending on the day and time, in fact there are times that I think they look more white than red. That is why I say....'stay the course'. For me at least life is good still....cheers....F/G
