  • EBMD, and blank spots in central vision

    HI all,
I posted this in my blog, but it really needs to be here to be seen by those of us who have EBMD as well as other eye conditions. I began to have 'blank spots' in the central vision of my right eye (my 'better' eye) 6-8 mos. ago. When I first attempt to focus on something, I initially can see the letter, but in seconds it disappears. I can only see it again after I rest my eye and keep it closed for a brief period to re-wet my eye and allow my eye to rest from focusing. But then as soon as I focus on that spot for any length of time, it disappears again. It's scaring the heck out of me, because I wonder what else is going on. My corneal specialist 6 mos ago said it was from EBMD, that it's where the irregular 'bumps' are in the cornea from it. But I don't think that is correct. This is always in my central vision. I can briefly see the letters to the left and right of center, but then they blank out too. Anybody had this happen before, or have any idea what causes it? I'm going to look up macular degeneration. I don't know alot about it, other than that you lose central vision. I pray that's not what it is. And I pray that it's not something else that's indicative of further deterioration.

    UPDATE:
I saw an excellent retinal specialist at Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore today. I have macular degeneration in my R eye. At the moment, the hole is not full thickness in the retina, which is a very good thing. And the hole is small. Right now, the specialist said he will monitor it closely, that I am to return in one month. If it's gone full thickness, then I'll have surgery. If not, then he'll continue to monitor it closely. He said I was fortunate to have caught it early before it got really large. So, that's where I am. I'm typing w/my eyes closed because the pain in my left eye is so excruciating after all the torturous examinations I had to undergo today. So am signing off for now.
