  • Eye Doc Says She Doesn't Know What To Do

I hope someone in here can give me a direction to go. I've seen numerous eye doctors since 2004.
Well this morning I called my eye doc (been seeing for a year now) back because she didn't call me back yesterday (bad business if you ask me) said she doesn't know what else to do for me. Okay so here is how all this started:

Thursday I went to her because my right eye was killing me (the front portion) after using a non-preservative drop (Refresh). I was having black shadows across my eye when I woke up in the mornings, my eye was stinging and the front part just hurt horribly. I used Refresh Tears (bottle) for five years and all of a sudden a couple of weeks ago I have acquired an allergy to those. So she told me to stop all drops thinking I'm over-medicating and to put just a cold cloth on my eyes when they feel dry. Did that and air conditioning blew in my eyes all day on Friday when I was at my college class. Sunday I acquired pink eye since there isn't enough tears to keep out the bacteria. So today I was informed she doesn't know what to do. Why didn't she tell me this before I spent over three hundred dollars....just thinking...
So in here I have been reading about using preservatives and those thinning out your ocular surface. I don't know where to go from here or if that is even the case with me or even how to find out.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it more than ever.
    Thank you

    Missie,

I have not had erosions, but that certainly sounds like it to me. How often were you putting in the preservative drops. You should definitely switch to the non preserved ones. Many here have had success with Dwelle which is sold in the dry eye shop or Muro 128 drops which are sold OTC for erosions. Dwelle is currently out of stock, but you can get on the waiting list. Sounds like you need a very thorough exam with specific dry eye testing. You may need to start a dry eye "routine" of warm and cold compresses and lid scrubs depending on what is causing your dry eye.

The good thing is you have come to the right place for help. I have found many helpful tips here from using saran wrap at night to how to do lid massages the correct way. I have learned so much more from this site than the doctors unfortunately.

Please find another doctor who specializes in dry eye. There is help out there.

    Best wishes,

    Melissa

Dr. Toyos ~ okay ~ yeah he is about 3 hours away from me.
But if I find no relief I may end up there.
        Thank you so much

          Missie,

What have you tried? How many times were you adding drops?
What was your diagnosis? Are you a contact wearer? If you add more specifics, we could help you narrow things down.

            Thank you so much Melissa
I used an entire bottle of 1 oz Refresh tears a week.
I wish I had known about this site years ago ~ it would have saved me a lot of trouble. From what I have read in here I was probably making it worse by using that much.
Non- preservative stings my eyes so bad and the right one is the worst. It felt like the front part of my eye was going to explode or something and stayed sore for days after using the non-preservative; so I;m scared of those.
I'm not sure I would want Lacricerts (spell?) because of what I have read about causing cornea abrasion. (and if it's going to happen to someone it will be me; as I do have the strangest things happen).
I am glad I have found this site. I appreciate you helping and I will do some searching to see what I can find in here.
If I have corneal abrasion do you think that would cause my eye to keep getting blurrier/fuzzy?

Time for a new doctor. Can she refer you to a specialist? (Is she a specialist?)

What did the doctor say about this?

What did the doctor say about this?
She said nothing except maybe I was over medicating.
When I stopped using the non-preservative eye drop the black shadow thing didn't come back, but the front of my eye still hurts.
Oh and no she isn't a specialist. But she dilated my eye and that is the only one I would let her dilate and now since the dilation everything is kind of blurry/fuzzier than before and whiter if that makes sense.
My eyes are so sensitive and I really don't like that. I have had a floater in that eye since well I don't really remember, but it would come and go and now it stays and it doesn't go away like it did before.
Thank you so much for helping me figure this out.

If you had a corneal abrasion, I think you would know it. Your eye would be watering and painful!!!!! But something is going on...

I agree with Rebecca, you need to see a good doctor and quickly.

                    Hey Melissa,
Okay I used 1 oz of the Refresh Tears per week (depended a lot on the air conditioning system at work) when I got laid off I used 1 oz every three weeks. But don't use those now as I have an allergy to them now.
My diagnosis in 2004 was severe dry eye (from makeup - eye liner allergic reaction)
                    I have never worn contacts.
The only thing I ever used was those eye drops.
I did have SmartPlugs put in but they are both out now. One lasted 4 years and the other 5 years ~ they both ended up infected so they had to be removed. Actually they never really seemed to help at all.
                    Restasis (spell?)never worked either.
This doctor said she saw nothing and my eyes look fine. She even looked at the cornea really well and said she saw no abrasions or anything. (she finally called me back while ago and I asked her about the thinning of my cornea and everything)
I've gotten so depressed and not fun to be around and I just don't like feeling like this. Not eating much, but not losing weight either, which is strange.
                    Thank you for your help

The other problem is I just don't know who to go to anymore.
Do I see a cornea specialist ~ someone who specializes in ocular surface?
I mean there is no one around here that I could go to ~ I could drive to Atlanta ~ it's about a 1.5 hour drive or Memphis or Nashville, those towns sound like they have better doctors, but it's a matter of knowing who to go to/

                        Missie,

I'm sorry, and I know how frustrating this can be. I would go straight to Dr. Toyos since he seems to know what he is talking about. At least, he may be able to give you a real good description of what is going on and what all is involved.

                        Do you experience burning?
How long were you on the restasis?
How many times a day do you have to put drops in?
                        What are you using now?

Sorry for the questions, just trying to help.
Sounds like your tear film is very compromised.

                          Thank you Melissa.
Yeah I'm scared something is wrong with my Tear film or ocular surface.
It's terrible that I don't have a job to have insurance. I worked for 30 years and now nothing.

I didn't use Restasis for very long it felt like someone poured acid on my eyes. I think I used them for like a month and 1/2 then the doc put in SmartPlugs and I couldn't use Restasis after than per the company. They Restasis people say if you have eye plugs that their product does not work.

I am now looking for someone locally that can help. I spoke with several offices today and explained what is going on and they said they cannot help and I appreciated their honesty.

                            Missie,

There are a few other drops that people on this site have had success with in restoring their tear film. One is called dwelle, and they sell it on this site. Another is freshkote; it is like dwelle, but you need a script. Clinitas Ultra 3 is another one and that is available for purchase online. I had success with Bausch and Laum SootheXP. That helped take away the burning as well.
You can get that at any drugstore. It has the mineral oil in it so it works if you have MGD or Meibomiam gland dysfunction which means you are not producing enough oil to keep the tears on the eye. That's what causes the burning, raw feeling. For a quick fix, I would try using the Soothe XP. I was using it every 2 hours.

                              Hi, Missie.

I'm sorry to hear that your doctor is not helping. I completely agree with everyone who said that you deserve another doctor. It took me seven doctors to get the help that I needed, and, on the way, they all helped in some way or another.

A good cornea specialist is worth finding.

Melissa is right about Dwelle being great for restoring tear film stability. The Dry Eye Shop is currently out of it and is anticipating a shipment at the end of June. They are taking pre-orders now.

FreshKote & Clinitas Ultra 3 are both the same eye drop, but they have different names, because FreshKote is sold as a prescription in the US and Clinitas Ultra 3 is sold over the counter in the United Kingdom. This second eye drop, FreshKote & Clinitas, is the same formula as Dwelle with a lipid added. I have not used it.

I hope this helps and that you can get to the bottom of what is causing your problem.

                              --Liz
